Pally is the player of the day

Pallister and Bruce back in the day. These two were the rock that United's first trophy laden spell under Fergie were built on. via thisislondon.co.uk

Gary Pallister cost 2.9 million pounds from Middlesbrough in 1989 and went on to make 317 appearances for United. Most of those games he played alongside Steve Bruce to form the Dolly and Daisy partnership. At the time his transfer fee was the highest between two English clubs and he turned out to be well worth the money. Pally won 4 league titles, 3 FA Cups, a League Cup, and a Cup Winners Cup.

He was unlucky that he left the club just before the team won the treble. His departure expedited in part by the arrival of Jip Jaap Stam the big Dutch man. I never understood it but despite being one of the top defenders in the country he only won 22 England caps. But Gary Pallister was a United player and legend through and through.

Pally is today's player of the day.

In his honor what is you favorite nickname for an athlete in any sport?

Weapon X – Brian Dawkins

I’m really liking these daily threads. It’s teaching me about players I may not otherwise have known or its giving me personal stories from fans who watched those players.

Sad to say my favourite player has the worst ever nickname – Ginga Ninga.

I do like Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva though from the UFC though. Who’d wanna fight him?

When I was a kid I loved

Gary Payton. Always thought the Glove was a cool nickname for a good defender.

I've been chewing on this one most of the day

I honestly can’t come up with a better one than when someone called Jeremy Maclin ‘Cheat Code’. He always seemed to be faster than everyone else in college…glad to see it’s working out for him in the NFL.

Wasn't there a guy in the NBA once

whose nickname was Rubber Band Man?

And even though I like him Colin Montgomerie being called Mrs Doubtfire was always hilarious.
