Few points after the Milan game

I've got the time so I'll do a recap.

- Wayne Rooney has been phenomenal this season. Maybe it's cause he's taking on the responsibility of the goals, maybe he's getting into the right places, maybe the crosses are finding him. Whatever it is I hope it stays that way.

- Park Ji-Sung has more than one oxygen tank. You can tell that his position at the start of the game is the hole behind the striker. 1 minute after that though and he's everywhere.

- Every game that Valencia plays is another memory of Ronaldo that I lose. This kid is freaky fast. Maybe it's unjust to compare him to the old Milan backline but he was torturing them all night long.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

Why we won the game:

- Milan came to score so that made it an open game and open games are what United are suited for. Interestingly at the we had 41% possession but it still looked like we were dominating. We had the most chances by far.

- The midfielders tracked back. We practically crowded out our own penalty box while defending. Valencia tracked back (and Nani to some extent except he doesn't defend well), got the ball, and bam off he went again on the attack. Ronaldinho and Pirlo though didn't seem interested.

- Conservative Milan play. I noticed that a lot of Milan attacks came via the middle. Example would be Seedorf trying to plug a through-ball from the middle. Either it's too crowded and the striker gives it back to him (rendering the attack useless since a midfielder would be hard on Seedorf the next time) or the defense reads it and gets rid of it.

- We dominated the wings. In my opinion if you're up against Gary Neville, you have to burst by him. Ronaldinho did none of that. There was no inkling of trying to go to the byline and whip it in. Neville did really well. 3 attacking crosses, 1 goal. Not too shabby.

Extra thoughts

- I think we have to consign ourselves to watching the 4-5-1. This perplexes me but time and again it works. I'll tell you why it perplexes me though. We bought Berbatov for $30 million. We know that he drops deep and hence takes himself out of the attack everytime he does that. So why play him in a 4-5-1? Effectively it becomes a 4-6 with the wingers playing an advanced role. I know people may not agree so I'm open to debate.

- Paul Scholes still can't tackle. Brilliant everywhere else (great set up for Park) but man oh man the tackles!

- Funny how the stadium roared when Beckham came on but got booed when he took his first touch.

- Christian Abbiatti looks like the most disinterested keeper in the world. Looked like Zydrunas Ilgauskas to me.

- Real Madrid are out of the CL. Shame. Would've loved a Ronaldo return.

on the becks point,

I think it was a lil sarcastic ( sidenote: didn’t Becks take the leather off the ball with that Volley, MANNN that stayed HIT)

Also, Becks picked up a green and Gold scarf, kinda pledging his support to the Anti Glazer campaign.

Gary Neville played a blinder. almost scored with a lovely left footed effort, before picking out an inch perfect cross. Kept the man with the teeth (Ronaldinho) quiet, and realised he wasn’t going to track him so bombed forward. tactically genius from the skipper.

I think Scholsey didn’t do too bad with his tackling tonight, made a couple of good ones, nothing too rash. I personally love when he goes flying in. His pass for Park for the 3rd was top draw, a little feint too shoot, then a lovely weighted ball.

As u say Rooney’s been Phenomenal. and its a combination of the things u say. he’s getting in the right places because he hasn’t been shoved wide to accomadate Ronaldo, valencia is playing wide right so he’s gunna get more crosses put in, he’s not dropping as deep as he used to and keeping a lot more central. if u saw Berbatov when he came on, he was often found near the touchlines and I always find mself thinking, ur never gunna score from there m8!!

Also a big plus of Rio and Vidic staying fit. AC had a few chances but as they have hardly played this season, we’l give them the benefit.

Went ona bit their, still buzzing from the game, fantastic result.

And by the way, Samir Nasri’s goal for Arsenal last night is well worth a watch, a better goal in the Champions League this year will be hard to find

Great game

Had fun watching the game.. =D

It was terrific.. Cant be any happier today..

-About the Berbatov point:
If you’re playing Berba, play 4-4-2 that’s what I think it should be, or play Park as one of the 3 midfielders.

-About the Becks point:
I think it was sarcastic reaction by the crowd. Haha. But eventually they still cheered for him after booing a while. Though I didnt want United to concede but I wished that volley went in for Becks.

Park Ji-Sung has more than one oxygen tank. You can tell that his position at the start of the game is the hole behind the striker. 1 minute after that though and he’s everywhere.

That was literally true. I saw Park make runs up both wings, he was in the box during Rooney’s first goal, he was all over the midfield, saw him in our box, on our right flank when Pirlo went that way, on our left a couple times. Like I said in the other topic, I honestly think you could make Park’s assigned location “the pitch”.

It’s good and encouraging to see some many peoples here actually appreciates what Park brings to the team..

Haha, there are bunch of peoples out there who cant wait to get rid of Park, numerously calling him the weak link in United.

sometimes people find it hard to realise what he brings to the team offensively

sometimes their critisicm is true, however Park has been a lot more direct with his play recently and has probably won over a lot of fans

by Sweet science on Mar 12, 2010 2:38 PM GMT up reply actions

I dunno, but for me he’s been playing the same way since he joined United, cutting from the wing, taking on defenders making runs in behind the defence, running all over the pitch.

Maybe recently his end product is there and it’s more obvious than before?

by dingmajiao on Mar 12, 2010 5:10 PM GMT up reply actions

yeah

and he’s been finding the end product in the big games too, always helps
