Manchester United Premier League Preview
It's time for a quick preview of the new Premier League season which starts on Saturday for most but doesn't really start until Monday.
Let's start with the key fixtures this season. Please note these dates can change.
Sep. 12th - Away to Everton - This has become a very tricky test and going to Goodison and coming away with 3 points could prove crucial in the title race as not everyone will be able to manage that feat. It's is also a crucial game because we need to be in good form heading into the following game.
Sep. 19th - Home to Liverpool - A must win for the fans who can't stand the scousers. I doubt the Pool will be challenging for a title this season but if we have hopes of winning the title we need to beat teams in the 4-8 range. Plus any dropped points at home can be very damaging.
Nov. 10th - Away to City - No explanation needed on this one.
Nov 13th - Away to Villa - part of a tricky stretch away from home. Villa have given us a little trouble lately and always make us work very hard for all three points.
Dec 11th & Dec. 18th - Home to Arsenal - Away to Chelsea - Let's count this as one big key fixture since they are so close together and these are likely our two biggest rivals for the title. This crucial pre-Christmas portion of the schedule won't decide the league but it is important to be in good form at the turn of the year and in a good position from which to attack the top of the table. 4 points from these two fixture is vital.
Mar 5th - Away to Liverpool - Always a massive fixture and let's face it winning at Anfield just feels so damn good. Not as good as when they had a good team but still pretty good.
Apr 23rd, Apr 30rd, and May 7th - Home to Everton, Away to Arsenal, Home to Chelsea - Is there any doubt about where the title will be won? As the schedule stands now this is going to be where the title is won or lost. Anything less than 7 points won't do. We close with the two Blacks, pool and burn, so this is THE crucial moment in the season. Oh and hopefully we will also have some Champions League games in this stretch as well. Talk about the season resting on a fortnight's worth of games.
So those are the key fixtures as far as I can see. Not sure who made the fixture list but putting those Arsenal and Chelsea fixtures so close together is either very interesting or very distressing. I can't decide which. I also left out the home match with City simply because there are only so many matches I can highlight as key. Let's call that one important. But being at Old Trafford means we should feel confident of getting all three points.
Now for the key players this season.
GK - VDS - This is an easy choice. VDS showed in the community shield that he still has the reflexes and shot stopping ability. Every once in a while, and it is rare, he looks a little lost on a high ball. That's the best I could do to come up with an negative about the man. He needs to remain fairly healthy and between the sticks.
Defender - Vida - Simply put he is the rock or the foundation that our success has been built on recently. If healthy for the majority of the season our defense will be tight and goals will be hard to come by for our opponents. He is the platform on which our attacking play is built. With Rio seemingly unable to stay healthy for long periods it is up to Vidic to keep Johnny Evans, Wes Brown or Chris Smalling calm and focused. Oh and he will be looking to chip in a few more goals this season as well.
Midfield - Valencia - This one was very tough. Scholes can be key and Carrick needs to be better this season. If he is we have an even better shot at some trophies. Nani's development continues and he is an important player. And of course there is Fletcher and Giggs. But for me the provider for Rooney's great goal scoring season was Valencia. his rise has been impressive and he will be looking to ad goals this season as well. With Chicharito and Rooney thriving on good service Valencia down the wing, usually thanks to a raking cross field ball from Scholes, will be key to our season.
Forwards - Berbatov - Rooney is just too obvious. We know he has to be good but I think we also know he will be. But he might not hit the same heights he reached last term in the goal scoring department. So Berba must be better. We will need goals from Berba as well as his great link play. The man can be an absolute genius and this is the season to really show that. I think the competition from Hernandez as well as their dovetailing talents when they are on the pitch together will help Berba raise his game.
Prediction: I think the league will come down to the last day of the season and I can't see us dropping points at home to Blackpool. Having Chelsea and Everton at home at the end of the season rather than away is also a slight help to us. I see United pipping Chelsea by a point or two just at the end.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Liverpool was a close title contender for much of the season, but they seem to have a lack of depth that will really hurt them in the second half once the Europa League and FA cup matches start taking their toll.
Chelsea will be there as well but I think they could see a dip in points this season… I think their defense is going to have a very tough time this year. Ivanovich looks very solid but Terry seems lost and Ashley Cole seems distracted. At the end of the day, though, I see Essien as their most crucial piece.
I have no idea what to expect of Arsenal. And despite City’s massive spending spree, I’m still not convinced they know how to put together a team, and I don’t think they’ll be a serious threat this year… Maybe next season?
Tottenham is a team to look out for. They may not win the league this season but they could certainly take 3 points from any of the top four in any given match.
I definitely see United as the favorites but any of a handful of teams could easily win the league as well.

Tottenham won't win the league
they don’t have the quality to take enough points. Neither does Liverpool, Villa or Everton. There are 3 teams with a chance to win as far as I can see and it’s us, Chelski and the Arse. Arsenal if they can keep Fabregas and Van Persie healthy are poised to really challenge now that Gallas is out of there. The battle for 4th between Pool, Villa, Everton, City, and Tottenham will be very interested and the top 3 as I see it will drop points to those teams but not enough for any of them to really challenge.

Well if Milner leaves take Villa out of the hunt. And unfortunately, I think City deserve more credit.
I have a feeling they could finish between 2-4.

I just don't see it
they may surprise me but there are just too many egos there. I mean look at their midfielders. Silva, Johnson, Wright-Phillips, Ireland, Kompany, Viera, Barry, De Jong, Yaya Toure, and maybe Milner? That’s 10 guys for 4-5 spots. They have so many players vying to play. Up front it’s the same thing. Tevez, Bellamy, Jo, Santa Cruz, Yet you look at their defense and they look vulnerable. Boateng and Kolorov look good players. But I just don’t see the quality at the back. You have to have a solid defense to build off of. When teams win titles they attack and score but they also concede very few goals for the most part.

I can't disagree with that
But I think Lescott will play better. The defensive depth is lacking compared to what else they have, but I can see them putting it together this season— maybe it’s just me.
In Boateng, Kolo, and Lescott, they do have three capable centre backs. I’d fancy a Boateng, Kolo, Lescott, and Kolarov line eventually. They’ll need to trim the fat they have in their squad though, I absolutely agree.

I can't see Johnson
going anywhere. He just got there and turned in several man of the match performances towards the end of last season. Ireland is more likely to go than Johnson IMO.

Haha no worries, I don't rate Adam Johnson as highly as others do though.
But he’s still a quality piece of their squad.
I do remember though when Michael Johnson was the next great holding midfielder. Wonder how that went haha.

It went as well as the next great central defender
Micah Richards. Adam Johnson is a quality player and if he plays on the opposite wing to David Silva then he will have a little more room as teams will be focusing more on the other winger.

I wonder who City rates higher now: Onuoha or Michah?
Then again, both are younger than 22 so they deserve more time. Michael Johnson though is no better than Peter Wittingham in the Championship, and I figure Johnson will be loaned out.
Then again, Johnson deserves games because he just recovered from injury. Still could be the next Colin Bell…

to be fair
I really rate Micah Richards. Always have, and I would snap him up for sure. He is a beast. His physical attributes are there on plain veiw, and with a little more know how, he could be a fantastic defender.

Except that can be said for a lot of players
Heck, TItus Bramble would be world-class if he took some high-dosage Aderall.

Spurs won't challenge for the title
Don’t get me wrong they have so much quality in their squad. But being in europe and matching last years succsess will count against them. Maybe they can scrape 4th.
Arsenal haven’t addressed the area’s of their squad which they should have. No goalkeeper and a young centre back will leave their defence short. They will do well to finish top 4
City’s squad will not gel. Too many players not getting action will disrupt them, and Mancini won’t keep the harmony, or his job. 6th
Liverpool have a top quality manager this season who will rejuvinate Gerrard and will get the best out of Cole. Torres needs to stay fit. Lack quality across the backline to really challenge though. 3rd.
Chelsea are always going to be strong. As Fergie states, the team that beats Chelsea will win the league. As you state in the article, Essien being fit is a massive plus. 2nd
United – I have a really good sense about this season. I knew we would struggle last season and tbh was very happy with how we fared. Losing Ronaldo and Tevez was always going to be a massive loss, but we coped very well. I have a better feeling than I did when starting the tree season’s previous to the former campaign as well. With the additions to the squad (Chicorito) and with Nani and Valenica only going to get better, I feel this will beout year. Berba will come good this year. His international retirement will only benefit him.

I can't agree with you on Arsenal
other than the part about the keeper. But they do have a couple weeks to sort that out. Koscielny is a solid defender and if he gels with Vermaelen they will be tough to crack. Wenger can get the best out of them as well. Remember how tough Arsenal were to score against in the Adams/Keown days? Plus they have some really quality full backs. They just need one or two central defenders as cover.
They are stacked in the midfield though. Fabregas, Arshavan, Nasri, Wilshere, Ramsay, Walcott, Song, Denilson, Rosicky. Plus up front they are healthy and the addition of Chamakh makes them very strong. I think Arsenal will be right there and it will be a three horse title race.

I'm still not sure about Arsenal defensively
Koscielny is unproven in the premier league and Vermaelen is a good CB but i’m not sure he is the quality you need to build a championship winning defence around e.g. Vida / Rio / Terry. If they were to lose either or both of Vermaelen and Koscielny to injury then they would be very light in defence. Most of their midfielders are also pretty lightweight with only Song and Diaby able to play a defensive role. I also question their keepers too, Almunia can be good but inconsistent and Fabianski looks edgy and has been horrific in pre-season.
Vermaelan
is 5 times the defender John Terry is.

That is just a ridiculous statement
If you are saying Terry is over rated i would agree to a certain extent, yes he lacks pace and i think that is becoming more evident, but he is still one of the best defenders in the league. To say Vermaelen, who as i said previously is a good solid premier league CB, is not just better but 5 times better is ridiculous! Arsenal have an average defence and keeper, with very little back up, this will be their Achilles heel throughout the season, when you will have injuries and need cover, you just need to look at us last year.
When you look at the teams that win the league, they all have a rock solid defence, as well as at least 3 to 4 good players who can cover, which arsenal don’t have.
Have you seen Vermaelen play?
He is much more than a solid defender. He is one of the top defenders in the league. Terry isn’t. What you saw from Terry in the Community Shield is pretty much what you can expect from him this season. Any team with pace up front will trouble him. But it’s not just pace. He is a diminishing player and he is diminishing quickly. Vermaelan on the other hand is only going to get better with a year in the Premier League under his belt.

I'd have to agree with this.
Much like the hope Daniel van Buyten showed early in his career. Arsenal has a special pairing, and Koscielny has promise. The back still could use more quality, but we’re talking about Arsenal and their defence is solid enough.
