United sign young Bebe from Portugal
Another striker has arrived at Old Trafford prior to the start of the season. But unlike Chicharito this new signing is pretty much unknown. Hands up if you had heard of this kid before today? Well I hadn't anyway. But this fits the MO at OT lately. Young players purchased before they are spotted by other teams and their price is driven up. Hernandez, Obertan and now Bebe have landed at the Theater of Dreams from relative obscurity in most cases. He is 20 and by all accounts raw. Will he spend a year in the reserves before going out on loan? Will he be the next Nani or Ronaldo? Or will he be the next Diouf? Speaking of which what does this say for Diouf's future? Welbeck? Macheda? Owen?
What little I know about this kid from the reading I have done in the last few minutes is intriguing. He has size at 6'2" and was raised in an orphanage. He represented Portugal at something called the Homeless World Cup. I can't even find a video of the guy on youtube. Talk about obscure.
Very interesting signing but obviously the kid has a load of talent for SAF to swoop this quickly. Have you heard of this kid? What do you think of the signing?
Here is a link to an article about the signing.

A few points
1) CQ spotted him and recommended him. Q’s pretty good with talent, so I wouldn’t begrudge him one here.
2) I’ve seen him a tad on TV and online, and I like him. He’s big, can grow into a frame. Wicked right foot (I remember seeing a strike from at least 30 yards right to left low corner), seems alright technically.
3) I figure he’s going to be raw, but he can’t be worse than Diouf. I also happen to still have hope for Diouf, anyway.
4) He seems to like to drop into space. He has the technical ability to play deeper, perhaps even as an attacking mid. I’m not sure if he has any particular creativity in his game, but he certainly is a playmaker. Perhaps Fergie can adapt his game, he certainly has all of the physical tool.
5) At the moment, he reminds me of Charlie Davies. Obviously this isn’t a good comparison be he has similar explosiveness and a deft first touch. His upside seems good though— he perhaps can be a nice well-rounded striker.
6) I don’t buy the reported 7M quid fee. I’d figure that that is his buyout, but him commanding that after moving for a nominal fee to Guimaraes makes no sense. I’m sure we got him for half the reported fee.
NIce picture by the way, haha.

Yeah but I wouldn't find that buy financially prudent unless we really found something.

It may sound odd but.........
the homeless world cup showcases some pretty dang good talent, you’d be surprised by the quality of some of the guys playing.
So that’s almost 25 million quid spent this summer, are people still going to harp on not having money to buy players? I’m going to be interested in how the striking pecking order shakes out….
1. Waza
2. Berba
3. Chicharito
4/5. Owen
5/4. Kiko
? Bebe
A bit confusing seeing as how Sir Alex has favored the 4-5-1 so much. I guess the stories about him potentially going back to a 4-4-2 might be true?

The thing I like about all the signings we have made
is that not one media person, journalist or leak has reported it before it was official. SAF plays it so close to the vest that it seems literally no one knows outside of him, the other club and the player.
No on-going Balotelli drama here, boys.

Good point
And I think that signals both the signings of Ozil and Balotelli are not in the cards. With Ozil, we obviously had the cash and he’s not here (I’m thinking of posting a fan post on him later tomorrow) and Balotelli well yet ANOTHER forward nah doesn’t make sense.

I think he ends up staying with Inter at this point.

Yeah, I really like that.. Somewhat gives us a surprise after it is concluded..
No one expected that.. But 7.4mil for this guy.. I have my doubts atm…
Let's save out doubts
until we have at least seen the guy play.

Doubts of the sum we paid for this guy, not his ability..
I’m actually rather excited to see how he turns out..
Still it's the same thing
We have no idea how good he is now or how good the scouts think he will be and we have no idea exactly how seriously Real Madrid were sniffing around. We paid what we had to pay to get him now let’s wait 5 years and see if it was worth it.

I mean this is United
But the fee is steep. I doubt we’re paying the entire fee immediately though, so I don’t think it seems as bad as it feels.

That's a good point
But that’s also because we’ve targeted kids no one have heard about. That can be good or bad, but that probably means patience will be required

Maybe Mesut Ozil slept with Fergie’s wife or something. I can’t see how 7 million for this Bebe kid is a better value than 10-15 for Ozil.
But who knows, maybe the kid will be a star someday.

But we could use him quite a bit… And I would like him if he’s going to cost as much as Bebe.

We don’t need wingers, either. I’d rather have an attacking central midfielder

we don't?
Who are the starting wingers now? Nani, Valencia, Giggs sometimes? Who else can we depend on to get the ball into the box for Rooney and Berba?
Obertan
Ceverley plus Evra, the Da Silvas and any other full back.

Really?
You’d use a fullback or a halfback if we were short on middies instead of trying to pick up Ozil?
Well no
but you asked who would be putting balls into ROoney and Berba so fullbacks have to be included. But we have Park, Nani, Valencia, Obertan, Giggs and Cleverley and we play 4-3-3 sometimes where we don’t need out and out wingers. I don’t see Ozil really addressing a need.

I read a quote somewhere
from Rooney that Sir Alex told him to get into the box some more. Rooney asked Sir Alex how he was supposed to head in his own crosses since Fergie wanted him to spend more time on the wings.
The point I’m getting at is, we need help on the wings. We’ve needed help since CR7 left, frankly. Yeah, Evra and the da Silvas can come forward and help out (they always have in Sir Alex’s formations) but I don’t want to depend on them to do that every time down the pitch. I look at the big league games and the Champion’s League and who do we have that’s talented and experienced enough to be the BIG difference like CR7 was. Park, Valencia and Giggs fit that profile…Fletcher too. I don’t know that I completely trust Obertan and Cleverley just yet in a big game…but I think the addition of Ozil brings us a player with some big game experience.
If we run a 4-3-3 all the time, then maybe we do have enough wingers…but I can see Fergie moving to a 4-4-2 or even some other hybrid formation like a 4-3-1-2 or something and needing quality wingers. But we know all too well how the injury bug can reach up and bite ANY player in the ass…I’d just soon have Ozil and not need him, then need him and not have him.
You left out Nani
and since Rooney scored 30+ goals last season I am not so sure that supply was the issue. The only issue we had last season was not having anyone other than Rooney to finish those good balls in. That has been addressed. We don’t need to bring in any more wingers. Especially not a player whose profile is only high because of a good World Cup. We have tried that before and Karel Poborsky and Kleberson didn’t really work out. We aren’t going to need Ozil so there is no reason to bring him in.
I am not sure what you were watching last season but this team didn’t miss CR7 and we didn’t need him last season in any match. We needed someone to fill in for Rooney when he was crocked and Berba didn’t step up. The real issue with last season was at the back where injuries, injuries that no other club could have coped with, derailed our season.

Nani and Valencia obviously, then Park, Giggs, and Obertan. We don’t need more wingers.

I don’t think Giggs can be considering a FULL game winger at the present time..
He’ll probably play as a CAM or behind the hole..
Though he’ll still have some minutes as a winger..
Personally, the winger position is the worst in our squad..
Only Nani, Valencia, Park and Giggs are proven performer..
But adding Bebe doesnt add a proven performer as well though..
We're fine at winger, unless you think Nani and Valencia need to be backups.

I don't judge too much on ability from You Tube clips
what i will say is that he looks and seems to play more on the wings rather than as an out and out striker, but I will reserve judgement until he has a season or so at the club. Fingers crossed he isn’t another Manucho,
Makes You Wonder
How hot Fergie was on Ozil if he’s signed this guy for £7.5m, while the German’s pricetag was reportedly around £13.5m.
If I’m reading this correctly, we didn’t buy Bebe for £7.5m, we triggered the buy-out clause in order to acquire him.
Well i think it depends
I think £7.5m was his buyout clause price, so that would appear to be the price paid. However i would be surprised that we would be paying this up-front maybe £3-4m now with the rest on appearances / goals. Although it does seem strange when Ozil appears to available for a few million more, but you never know we may yet still sign Ozil too.
I may be wrong
but I doubt you can trigger a release clause unless all the money is up front. What if he doesn’t make enough appearances or score enough goals to trigger the rest of the funds? Then we triggered a 7.5 million quid release clause by paying 3-4 million quid? Doesn’t add up to me.

Yeah just read that back, what you said makes more sense
Just seems an awful lot of money to me for someone who is an unknown quantity, it seems Queiroz was very keen on him and i know he has a pretty good eye for spotting talent, so will see how he turns out.
He has only just turned 20
so his skills will be raw.
I think we’re paying for what he could become rather than what he is now. Give him some time at Old Trafford and we’ll see if he can develop into a Manchester United class player.
It depends
Some contracts structure it differently. In Spain, it’s generally up front since it’s a legal obligation to list a buyout price, whereas in other places it may be different.
