Manchester United host Newcastle to kick off 2010/11 Premier League Campaign - August 16th, 2010

It was a trophy winning pre-season for United. But the real games start today with a 19th English title hopefully awaiting United at the end of the road. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

Well it's finally here. After a weekend of mixed results for United, a draw between Arsenal and Pool mitigated by West Brom acting like a cheap hooker rolling over lying there and taking it against Chelsea, it's time for the real season to begin. The opponents today will be Newcastle United who are back in the league that frankly their wonderful supporters deserve to be in. Newcastle do feature former United striker Alan Smith and defender Danny Simpson and United killer Kevin Nolan who scores at OT for fun. Andy Carroll can be a handful up front and Vida will have to keep a close eye on the young striker. but this game is United's to lose. A statement of intent is needed after Chelsea's result this weekend.

I would like to see Danny Simpson get the start for Newcastle. He is a Salford boy and I always thought he was a little unlucky to only make 3 United appearances. I am sure the young lad will be dying to get a run out against his former club and the club he supported as a boy. He always looked dangerous going forward but I think he is a player Valencia could give the run around if they are matched up against each other.

I also have a soft spot for Alan Smith. Despite the fact he came from Leeds he was a player that gave his all for United when he played and he had a little bit of Sparky in him. A pitbull that would lead the line and was capable of the spectacular. And what about that goal against Fulham? Such determination.

I always thought he was unlucky at United. Imagine if Smith had been allowed to play as a striker more often and hadn't broken his leg. Put him up front with Rooney and watch defenders quake in their boots. Alas, it wasn't to be for Smith and United so he moved on to Newcastle where he is vice-captain. He was sent off on his last visit to Old Trafford.

For United the line up and who plays today is really important. Will Rooney start? How much time will Chicharito see? There are interesting questions as we get closer and closer to kick off but ultimately it doesn't really matter. The players who start today for United will be better than the players on the pitch for Newcastle. It's that simple. If we match their work rate and determination we should be able to win this match. But it's almost never easy for United on the opening day of the season and Newcastle will be desperate to prove they belong back in the top flight.

Lineup:

Van der Sar
O’Shea, Vidic, Evans, Evra
Valencia, Fletcher, Scholes, Nani
Berbatov, Rooney
Subs: Kuszczak, Rafael, Smalling, Carrick, Giggs, Macheda, Hernandez

Probably the line up

most of us would have predicted. Hernandez coming off the bench when a tired Newcastle defense has heavy legs is a frighteningly good prospect.

Since the World Cup

Javier Hernandez’s schedule

vs. MLS All-Stars- GOAL
vs. Chivas/Man U – GOAL (1st half as Chivas player, almost got it back as a United player)
vs. Ireland – ??? ( I think he got one, not sure)
vs. Chelsea- GOAL
vs. Spain – GOAL

Hope to see him in the 2nd half…would really like to see him playing just behind Rooney….

Barton fouls Nani

Nani drops like a rock grabbing his ankle….yeah, that was a nasty foul, deserving of a yellow…

Joey Barton looks like a grade B porn actor with that mustache

Nani and James Perch get tangled up

Perch gets the caution…free kick about 30 yards out…Rooney over the ball…

United dominating possession in the first 30 minutes

Evra even able to get to the other touch line with possession. They may have the Lion’s share of possession, but nothing to show for it (yet)

Nani with an interesting cross to the far post

Berba on the other end, but Harper pushes it away for a corner

So far about what I would have expected

and I can’t wait to see Chicharito have a go at this Newcastle defense.

O'Shea's missed header at the midfield

nearly led to disaster…good job by Vidic and Evans at the back to stop that…

This could get ugly for Newcastle

and let’s hope it does!!! We’ve got some ground to make up in the goal difference category.

The formations here are fascinating

Fluid shift from a 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3. I love this fluidity

I thought I saw a 4-2-3-1 in there

and I guess they went to the 4-3-3 when Fletcher went forward…

They can afford to do that with this much possession….

by CPC on Aug 16, 2010 8:52 PM BST up reply actions

Berba is dropping back like a trequartista (but with some defending)

Nani is moving up a bit and Valencia will drift back. So shifting between a 4-4-2 (with Berba as striker), 4-2-3-1 (with Berba in the hole), 4-4-3 (with Nani advanced), or 4-0-<5>1 with Scholes relatively deep where Berba would be and Fletcher advanced left.

Thoughts on the first half?

I’m at work so have been watching on and off a little. I am going to watch it when I get home again. So far from what I have sen it seems like United are pretty much dominating possession and Newcastle are getting worn down trying to defend.

That's the problem with Berba

problem is maybe the wrong word but nonetheless Berba needs to finish that. He just isn’t as clinical as should be with his ability.

I won't blame him there

Harper played it very well and he didn’t have the space to loft it from my view

I disagree

he has to score those types of chances with his ability. Or at least make the keeper work.

I mean I expect him to score

But I think credit should go to the keeper there too, that’s all

I don't think he's the same

player that he was at Spurs. Maybe I’m remembering him wrong, but I though he was a strong finisher when paired up with Keene.

Nolan, Barton, Smith

this Newcastle side certainly has some players that other teams supporters can hate.

He did seeze on a bad pass very quickly

which lead to Giggsy’s goal. He and Valencia both did good work to win the ball back there. I like strikers who put themselves about and don’t just wait for the other players to create chances for them.
