Most of the first 5 minutes

were in the middle 3rd, but Rooney just sent a beautiful pass to Valencia on the right edge of the box, who tried to go over the keeper, but the keeper saves.

Chelsea keeping the ball better

but we look the more threatening early.

Why didn't he bring that down first?

Scholesy had all the time in the world.

Valencia with a nice centering pass

to Scholes who blasts the ball about 20 feet over the net from 15 yards. While his tackling is in midseason form, his shooting clearly isn’t.

First real chance fallsto Chelsea

VDS with an excellent save.

Rooney should have done better

but Owen doesn’t look sharp at all.

That is the second time

a United player wasn’t sharp enough in the box.

VALENCIA!!!!

Scholes finds Rooney going to the right who slides a pass past Terry into the box to an oncoming Valencia who bangs it past Hilario…1-0 UNITED!!!

Disappointed

by the overall performance in the first half…poor passing to start the game, unable to keep possession…but 2 players really impressed me with their play: Valencia looks more comfortable at the wing than he was last year. He seems to be playing more aggressively both defensively and on offense. Fabio is also impressing the hell out of me the way he’s locked down the left side. His quick feet are going to get alot of tackles this year.

by CPC on Aug 8, 2010 3:50 PM BST reply actions

I thought it was a decent half

we were the more dangerous overall although Chelsea have had a couple chances. I really thought that Scholes and Rooney were the two really controlling the play for United. They looked good. O’Shea, predictably, hasn’t.

That's a position we've been weak at

for a couple of years…Gary Neville isn’t healthy enough anymore…Wes Brown…John O’Shea…Rafael could anchor that RB spot for a long time

Feels like we need a bit more

bite in midfield. Fletcher would have been nice.

Scholes and Chicharito

are going to be fun to watch this season.

I'm not saying it'll be easy

but they certainly aren’t of the quality we can expect from Chelski, Arsenal, City or Spurs.

At the very least, it's at home

If it were at St. James, I’d be a bit on the edge of my seat

As of this moment

who is your starting 11 for Newcastle?

I got: Van der Sar, Rafael, Vidic, J. Evans, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Giggs, Nani, Hernandez, Rooney. Subs: Kuszczak, O’Shea, Fabio, Scholes, Berbatov.

by CPC on Aug 8, 2010 4:56 PM BST up reply actions

Damn.. Chicharito was awesome today, with his movement not really his finishing..

Nearly conceded a goal after some poor communication..

We looked great, for the most part, and Chelsea pretty much looked like crap from top to bottom.

Our depth at defense is a little scary, to be honest, and I hope that doesn’t come back to hurt us. I haven’t been too impressed by Smalling, and the Da Silvas seem a bit too reckless and undisciplined.

Also, I’d like to see how Rooney and Chicharito play alongside each other

Smalling is going to take some time

to settle in at the club. But with Vida, Rio and Evans we should be OK in the middle.

Smalling = fixture in the reserves

Give him time and he will turn out to be useful

Danny Sturridge looked fanatastic for Chelsea after he came on, I actually thought he was the best player on the pitch for a good stretch of the 2nd half.

They also created some pretty solid chances, but had some really poor finishing (and VDS was really solid). They looked rusty, but they definitely had a few bright spots.

Reyes, Thole, Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis, Martinez, Tejada...

Has there been a shot of the 3rd jerseys yet?

Seen the home and the (putrid) away jerseys but haven’t heard anything about a 3rd this year.

Third kit is always the previous season’s second kit. This year it’s the black jersey with blue chevron

I still think the away jersey looks absolutely fine. I like it.

Personal preference though.
