POST-MATCH REACTION THREAD: Otelul Galati 0-2 Manchester United | UEFA Champions League

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA - OCTOBER 18: Wayne Rooney of Manchester United celebrates scoring from the penalty spot during the UEFA Champions League Group C match between FC Otelul Galati and Manchester United at the National Stadium on October 18, 2011 in Bucharest, Romania. Well, that didn't go as expected. Manchester United struggled for a breakthrough but finally got it after a handball by Otelul Galati's captain Sergiu Costin -- Wayne Rooney converted the penalty for the opening goal in the 64th minute. Just two minutes later, United captain Nemanja Vidic was harshly sent off after a rash challenge -- it could be argued that Vida deserved a booking but being sent-off was quite ridiculous. In stoppage time, Rooney drew a penalty and then converted it for his brace. The Reds dominated possession in this match but they could never quite break down a well organized Galati. If United want to win Group C -- and avoid drawing a group winner in the first round of the knock-out stages -- then three points were likely a must in Bucharest. It wasn't pretty. But it was three valuable points.

SL Benfica earned a 2-0 away victory over FC Basel in the other Group C match. Benfica now have 7 points from three matches while United now have 5 points from the same number of matches. Basel sit on 4 points. United next play Galati again in another group stage tie at Old Trafford in two weeks. Domestically, the Reds face their noisy neighbors on Sunday. The derby will be a hugely important affair.

MOTM = Michael Carrick

Ran the midfield with Anderson with perfection..
The creativity was lacking but his passing and switching of play was absolute stellar..
Made some great forward passes that on another day might open up the defence..
His only mistake was a poor shot that should at least been on target by his standard..

Control play well and slowed down Lindegaard just after we scored and Vidic got carded..
Another decent shift in center back and many last ditch blocks..

Got wrongfully carded.. Great day for a Carrick fan today.. =DD

Funny how two different people can see a performance so differently

I thought Carrick was dreadful. Hardly ever passed the ball forward. Slows down our play too much. We needed to up the tempo and he isn’t capable of doing it. Every time we looked to counter or to push the play the ball would get to Carrick and we would slow right down again. IMHO he is absolutely dreadful. I used to like him but the last 2 or 3 season I am completely on the other side. Absolutely rubbish player who was terrible today.

He played a lot of forward passes today.. Maybe we’ll wait for Gene’s analysis to see if he really did.. But from what I saw, he played a lot today. .

Not to add his crucial blocks/inteception here and there throughout the game.. I wont argue that his style has changed this 2 years and he was more exciting to watch in the past. But I think he’s doing more little things with his new style as compared to the past..

Yeah maybe

I’m not saying one of us is right and one is wrong. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. I just found it interesting that two people could watch the same game and perceive something so differently.

Valencia was terrible today IMO. Every time he touched the ball he couldn’t beat his defender, nor did he put in a decent cross. I thought Nani was pretty nonexistent in the first half, but had a great second half. I think he likes playing on the right side rather than the left, but maybe that’s just me. I thought Evra also had another very strong game as well. United’s final ball was also dreadful in this game. Other than that, we got the 3 points, so i’m satisfied.

Nani certainly does prefer the right side

When he’s out on the right, he has the option of beating the man and cutting in, beating the man and getting to the line to whip in a cross, or playing an early cross. His delivery has sp much whip on it he can play a cross in from 30 yards out on the right hand side. Im sure that adds to his game. It makes him unpredictible.
