A statistical look at potential Manchester United midfield transfer targets

This writer is quite fond of Javi Martinez

With the long-term unavailability of Darren Fletcher and Anderson, and also because of the general uninspiring performances at times from Manchester United's central-midfield, the transfer talk has heated up in anticipation of the upcoming January transfer window. There are questions whether United can even afford a big January purchase but that topic can be discussed in other write-ups. For simplicity's sake, I've decide to use the Guardian's recent piece showing potential midfield transfer targets in pictures as a basis to discuss which players United might pursue.

It's important to keep in mind the obvious fact that midfielders come in all sorts of different styles and roles. In a three-man midfield, it's typical to have a ball-winner, a tidy distributor, and an incisive playmaker. In a two-man midfield, these roles tend to get blended within the duo but one is generally still more conservative while the other is more attack-minded. However, there is certainly gray areas as well in player's roles, depending on a team's tactical system and personnel.

Sir Alex Ferguson's sides over the years generally have had two main sources of creativity: (1) a withdrawn forward that drops deep and operates in the space between the lines (e.g. Wayne Rooney, Eric Cantona) or (2) from their wingers providing incisiveness in attack (e.g. Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, etc.). The role of their central-midfielders has generally included operating from a relatively deep position -- if they got forward into attack, it typically was due to well-timed late-arriving runs into the box. With that simple description in mind, here's a table below providing a statistical (from 2011/12 season through December 15) look at potential midfield targets mentioned by the Guardian. Following that, I've provided a brief comment on each player.

Statistics courtesy of: whoscored.com

KEY: PPG = passes per game, Pass % = pass completion percentage, KP = key passes per game, C = accurate crosses per game, LB = accurate long balls per game, TB = accurate through balls per game, TKL = tackles per game, INT = interceptions per game

* Statistics for Gaitain, Garcia, and Eriksen were only available for their UEFA Champions League matches this season and not for their domestic leagues.

** For Sneijder, Gotze, and Schweinsteiger, statistics are provided for both Champions League and domestic league.

* Rodwell: The 20-year-old is rumored to be have been monitored by Fergie for quite some time. Initially considered a defensive-midfielder, but he has shown the ability to get forward as of late. He's in the mold of a box-to-box midfielder.

* Gaitan: The Argentine has recently been linked with United as Fergie got a close-up of him during their two recent Champions League encounters with Benfica. In both matches, Gaitan was deployed out wide but he was narrowly positioned. He's considered to be more a creative player that operates between the lines as opposed to being a true winger.

* Modric: Perhaps a perfect system fit for United: someone who can dictate from deep with tidy distribution and with long, accurate diagonal balls to the flanks. Harry Redknapp likely won't be selling though in January.

* Ganso: No statistics available for the Brazilian. He's been compared to Kaka and he's scouted to be a number ten or trequartista type of player. His club, Santos, faces FC Barcelona on Sunday in the FIFA World Club Cup final -- that should provide opportunity to get a good look at him.

* Sneijder: Rumored to be coming to Old Trafford last summer and those rumors will likely persist in the upcoming transfer window. The Dutchman likes to operate in the space between the lines, similar to where Rooney is most comfortable currently. His form has dipped in the past year.

* Tiote: The combative midfielder is currently battling a knee injury but he can provide bite and ball-winning to any midfield. Ideally, he should be partnered with playmakers.

* Martinez: Arguably the most impressive in the Spain U-21 side that won the European Championships this past summmer -- a squad that included Juan Mata. A deep-lying playmaker -- with both fantastic technical skill and positional awareness -- that can play both as a midfielder and center-back. United need another deep-lying playmaker when considering Michael Carrick is the only one in the squad currently.

* M'Vila: A player whose stock has risen recently and he even has established himself in France's national team. A ball-winner who is solid in distribution from deep.

* Cabaye: A standout player for Newcastle that provides clever distribution from the center of the park. His defensive statistics are impressive as well.

* De Rossi: Another player who is thought to have been long monitored by Fergie. Perhaps another ideal fit at United: a deep-lying midfielder who is both superb in his ball-winning ability and with his range of passing. He's Roma through-and-through but with the changes at the club, and with his contract up in 18 months, he could make a move. Roberto Mancini is an admirer of him though too.

* Gotze: Quite simply, Germany's brightest prospect. A versatile attacking-midfielder who is showing flashes of potential world-class ability.

* Schweinsteiger: Another player who is long-rumored to have been admired and targeted by Fergie. Also, another player who would provide a perfect fit in the Modric mold. The ship has likely sailed though in regards to a possible move to Old Trafford.

* Marchisio: A perfect compliment to the silky, deep-lying playmaker Andrea Pirlo. This is the first I've heard of his name linked with United.

* Garcia: A solid holding-player that positions himself well and is calm when distributing out of the back. Has good size too and he likely could acclimate well to the Premier League.

* Eriksen: A between the lines playmaker who shined nearly a year ago in a friendly for Denmark against England. United will get a good look at him in February when they face Ajax in the Europea League.

I think we need two

A defensive midfielder and someone who can unlock a defence

I like Rodwell, but for a defensive midfielder, his stats arn’t all that impressive

So for DM I would like Tiote or Martinez (If we do get Martinez and he sucks, im just going on Gene’s assesment, so il blame him)

For an attacking midfielder, we need someone who can pick a pass others can’t. I think the most important stat here is key passes.

Gaitan, Snjeider, Goetze and Errikson all play over two key passes a game. Im not sold on Snjeider being a system fit for United and as Gene rightly points out, he has done nothing of note all year. Not sure if Gaitan will be able to cut it in the Premier league. So I would prefer one of the latter two.

Good work here Gene.

Sneidjer's form has seen off when he's been able to this season...

…but early on, so was most of Inter’s. I have to wonder how much of his play was really the entire squad being off early on.

looks like my boy Javi Martinez got a red-card today...

for a bad tackle in the box. I hope that drives his value down….

haha

Wishful thinking

Balotelli would be worth 20 pence if that was the case

by Sweet science on Dec 17, 2011 9:56 PM GMT up reply actions

Please allow me to troll a 'lil here

Those who still want Sneijder at OT are IDIOTS!!!!! There I said it.

Imo versatility is what we need especially at times like this where we have almost a dozen at the Carrington treatment table. I personally would like to see Rodwell in our colours. Heard he would cost us the same amount of money we just lost from getting eliminated from Champions League (20m)

by brandding on Dec 17, 2011 4:36 PM GMT reply actions

Why no to Sneijder? I need to hear your reasoning.

I like him because he would immediately move into the first 11 and provide cover behind Rooney, which we are currently lacking.

by nolefansam on Dec 17, 2011 4:46 PM GMT up reply actions

He'l cost about 40M

And there are lingering doubts about how he will handle the PL and the way we play. He’s not excatly a spring chicken either. 27 I think. So if the doubts are proved true, his value will diminish big time if we want to get rid of him a year or two later

by Sweet science on Dec 17, 2011 5:02 PM GMT up reply actions

For that much I agree, but I don't think Inter have the leverage to get 40m anymore.

I would love to see him in Cleverley’s role from September. He’s definitely not a holding mid but I don’t think that’s what is necessarily lacking in midfield right now anyway.

by nolefansam on Dec 17, 2011 5:15 PM GMT up reply actions

Reasons Aplenty

I think sweet science mentioned most of the things I wanted to say. Note that Inter still has Champions League while we don’t. Plus with Financial Fair Play kicking in soon (and we lost 20m from getting eliminated this season) we can no longer afford him unless we start to sell some of our players.

Tactics-wise, Sneijder strives in the no.10 role which Rooney’s doing it for us this season and last. Not sure if he can do Cleverley’s role – Cleverley has great positional sense in finding spaces to pass and receive when in attack. It’s not coincidental that when he was lost at Bolton our early season attacking intent vanished too. He is very very vital for our inward cutting wingers imo.

I’m not gonna put forward any arguments on whether Sneijder will fit into our system or not. In short I think we already have a Sneijder in Rooney.

by brandding on Dec 17, 2011 5:37 PM GMT up reply actions

Great points.

What then would be the vision for him if he really is a target?

by The Bull Gator on Dec 17, 2011 6:34 PM GMT up reply actions

I believe he has moved higher up the pitch in recent years. At Ajax he played deeper than he does at Inter. Not sure how he was used at Real.

I think he could play midfield for United with Carrick or Jones as his complement. I actually love the thought of Carrick holding and Sneijder roaming free to find space and create. The fact that he could be cover for Rooney is also a plus.

Obviously this is all dependent on the price being right. For 40m I’d rather have Modric anyday.

by nolefansam on Dec 17, 2011 7:23 PM GMT up reply actions

He has definitely moved up.

I think he does some of his best work being able to roam. It’ll be interesting see how he does when he returns to form, although I do agree that for 40 I’d rather have someone else. Also being an Inter fan, I’m a big Sneijder supporter, but for that much, I think he needs to come back and really get his form back to be considered at 40. Not at he can’t be worth it, but at this exact moment that’s hard to see.

by The Bull Gator on Dec 17, 2011 7:58 PM GMT up reply actions

Thing is

For him to roam he either has to play in the hole behind the main striker or play as a 1/3 of a three man midfield. His defensive qualities are lacking for a two man midfield.

Prehaps we could utilise him as a roaming winger in a 4-3-3. That way the midfield could help cover the wide area that he vacates

by Sweet science on Dec 17, 2011 8:26 PM GMT up reply actions

Not a bad idea.

Wonder how effective he can be in that role, but it could keep him away from too many defensive responsibilities, which – as you said – aren’t exactly special.

by The Bull Gator on Dec 17, 2011 8:35 PM GMT up reply actions

I actually wrote about Sneijder during this past summer

I’m against bringing him to Old Trafford….

I havn't seen a lot of him

But I would rather him than Snjeider. And it seems he has alot of talent. And he is young so he still has a lot of potential to fufill which is always good IMO

my thought is to solve the problems in midfield first...

Best option for man utd according to me

Schweinsteiger he is the ideal midfielder for man utd then Javi Martinez,Cabaye and Tiote in that order. You dont require Sneider as he will want to play in a similar situation as Rooney You require someone who can play behind Rooney. And as you play a 2 man midfield the player has to be good at both defending and attacking like a box-to-box
