Manchester United take a 22-player squad to Basel -- suspended Michael Carrick is not amongst the squad

Rio Ferdinand is deemed fit enough for travel to Basel while Michael Carrick will stay back in Manchester because of suspension.

Manchester United are set to depart from Manchester in minutes for Switzerland and the squad that will get on the plane has been announced. The Reds are faced with a plethora of injuries at the moment but it is important to remind that midfielder Michael Carrick will not travel with the squad due to suspension after picking up a third booking in the previous five group stage matches. United need a result if they hope to advance to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson will also be without Javier Hernandez (Chicharito), Dimitar Berbatov, Anderson, Michael Owen, Rafael, and Fabio due to injury. However, there is a bit of good news as Rio Ferdinand is expected to board the plane after being substituted off this past weekend versus Aston Villa after receiving a knock in that match. In other news, there is no confirmation to the rumor that omnipotent Phil Jones will fly the plane to Basel. Here is a list of the full 22-player squad travelling to Basel:

Goalkeepers: David De Gea, Anders Lindegaard, Ben Amos

Defenders: Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Zeki Fryers

Midfielders: Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher, Ji-Sung Park, Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Larnell Cole, Darron Gibson

Forwards: Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda, Mame Biram Diouf

I got a strong feeling we'll see 4-5-1 in Basel

… which I don’t think is a bad thing.

If I have time, before Wednesday’s match, I have a tactical post in regards to this that I’ve been wanting to write. No guarantees though.

The team needs a win out of this game desperately and I mean far beyond the CL ambitions. I will not say the wheels have fallen off, but there must be a flat and the spare isn’t holding up. A win here would be as good as getting the car to the shop. A few wins in a row will be new tires for the either wise solid automobile.

tl;dr – No player = the flat. Its a team issue and as a team they will work through it…

A draw will send us through as well

I fully expect Benfica to defeat Galati in Lisbon.

I dont care if its ugly tomorrow, a result is all that matters right now. Elimination from Champions League at this early of a stage would be disastrous

selection in central-midfield and up top is so limited

Central-midfield: Fletcher and Giggs certainly start I would think but what if Fergie wants to play with 3 in the center? Jones? Park’s only use in such a big match in the center would be to mark a dangerous deep-lying playmaker (e.g. when he had Pirlo in his pocket a few seasons ago).

Forward(s): Rooney could lead the line if we play with 3 in the center. Is Welbeck fit enough to play the full 90? Macheda would be the option off the bench then if we needed to chase a goal. I’d rather use Welbeck as a substitute for the final half hour if fitness is a concern.

Chelsea winning their group is bad news for United if they finish second

MU can’t play another team from England so now there’s now an 80% chance of United playing Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter or Bayern Munich. The only lucky draw would be to play APOEL from Cyprus.

Or maybe with a lot of luck they could win the group and get an easier draw.
