Manchester United FC related transfer rumors, news and links

Edwin van der Sar reportedly wants to stay involved with Manchester United in some capacity after his retirement at season's end. Who will replace him as United's No 1? (Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images)

It's the international break but transfer rumors and news that relate to Manchester United FC keep pouring in. Here are some links to keep you up to date on the happenings of the club:

Transfer Rumors

* Despite the reported 108.9-million-pound loss reported this week by United's parent company Red Football Joint Venture, the club apparently has a 165-million-pound transfer chest. Names such as Jack Rodwell, Ashley Young, Gareth Bale (be still my heart), Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Douglas Costa, Manuel Neuer, Mario Goetze, and Daniele De Rossi are being linked as possible arrivals to Old Trafford this summer. {Manchester Evening News}

* Neuer reportedly wants to win a Bundesliga title and may not want to leave Germany any time soon. The Germany No 1 is also rumored to be a target of Bayern Munich. {M.E.N}

* There are contradicting reports as to whether Shaktar Donetsk's Douglas Costa was visiting Old Trafford last weekend during the match versus Bolton Wanderers. This piece examines the possibility of Costa being the player to replace Paul Scholes. Sir Alex Ferguson has once labeled Costa as "probably the best young player in South America." {M.E.N}

More transfer rumors and news after the jump...

Star-divide

* Is Roma's Daniele De Rossi, who is considered Roma through-and-through, ready to leave his club for Old Trafford? The 27-year-old Rossi reportedly is considering leaving the Serie A for Old Trafford. {The Telegraph}

* United's interest in goalkeeper Rene Adler has Bayer Leverkusen nervous. The German club would like to tie down their 'keeper to a new contract, but they appear to be accepting of the fact that Adler may leave if United come calling. {ESPN Soccernet}

* Graham Hunter examines whether or not if Atletico Madrid's 20-year-old David De Gea is ready to be United's next No 1 in replacing the soon to be retired Edwin van der Sar. {ESPN.com}

* FC Twente, the current Dutch champions, are prepared to act as a feeder club for United as United seek to obtain the services of promising South American talent. United have had a similar relationship with Royal Antwerp in the past as this is necessary due to the stringent UK work permit regulations. {ESPN Soccernet}

General News

* Earlier reports of Rio Ferdinand missing the rest of the current season due to a calf injury may have been premature (shocking!). The 32-year-old defender has received treatment in Germany and he may return in time to contribute for this season's run in. {The Guardian}

* The always excellent Jonathan Wilson has a critical look at  Fabio Capello's handling of the England captaincy. {Sports Illustrated}

* After retirement, van der Sar plans to keep a relationship with United. This article also discusses Neuer as van der Sar's possible successor. {The Guardian}

* Fergie reportedly is willing to meet the BBC director general in an effort to end their feud. The United boss has refused to speak to the BBC after they aired a documentary about the Gaffer's son in 2004. {The Guardian}

* The FA attempts to explain their punishment of Fergie. They say the United boss undermined the Respect campaign. {ESPN Soccernet}

* England have continually looked for a striker tandem that is comparable to what Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer (SAS) provided in the past. Can Wayne Rooney and Andy Carroll be the next great English tandem? {M.E.N}

* Now that Chris Smalling is beginning to establish himself, United would like the youngster to become more vocal on the pitch. {M.E.N}

Gabriel Obertan bagged a brace in United's latest reserves match versus Newcastle United's reserves. In the same match, United starlet Ravel Morrison was sent off.  {M.E.N}

* A fictional and hilarious transcript of how the Dirty Tackle imagines Rio confronting Capello on the England captaincy matter

The actual quote from Gill doesn't really say anything about the 165 million in the bank being just for transfers
“We are not a club that needs to sell. We have money in the bank so there is zero pressure on that, no pressure at all to sell any star player whether it is Wayne Rooney or X, Y or Z. I can categorically say that. The philosophy is to retain and attract the best players. We have £165m in the bank but in some ways we would prefer to have £80m in the bank and Ronaldo on the pitch.”

It sounds like he’s just trying to reassure the fans that the club is keeping the operating expenses separate from the interest payments, not stating that they are going on a spending spree. It’s also worth noting that the quote was in August, not coinciding with the release of those figures (noted here). I’d guess that the club moves for a keeper and maybe another piece, but there will need to be quite a bit of outgoing salary to compensate. While the debt isn’t the crisis the media makes it out to be, without new ownership expenses still probably need to be curbed to prevent it from becoming one.

perhaps I should have done better to stress the tone of "apparently"

Honestly though, I don’t think anyone knows what kind of finances United have available, or more importantly, are willing to spend. This summer will be telling. If they went on a huge shopping spree, I wouldn’t be surprised. If they made a world-class goalkeeper signing and little else, I wouldn’t be surprised either. My best guess is that a world-class goalkeeper is brought in along with a young and promising center-midfielder. I can see the club waiting a year to bring in a wide player on the left side if they feel they can get by another season with Nani, Valencia, Park, and Giggs. United also have the option of bringing in Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck into the squad, two players who’ve had successful loan stints.

I don't think that's anything on you at all

It just irks me when one newspaper finds a quote with a figure in it (in this case the guardian), and other papers simply take that figure and use it to fit their story in the next several days. Personally I can’t see United spending if the NFL season appears to be in jeopardy, I just can’t picture Glazer approving it.

I haven't even thought of the Tampa Bay Bucs angle...

that’s certainly some food for thought.

I look at it this way....

it would be difficult to have owners that are much worse. In addition, the prospective buyers from Qatar likely wouldn’t need massive loans to buy the club with. Seemingly, the club would be much stronger financially.

I do admit...

I’m no expert in all of this by any means, far from it. I’ve tried to avoid reading up too much on this because… well, its not fun for me. However, here’s a good breakdown of the club’s finances…
