Transfer discussion thread
This will give everyone a forum to voice their opinions on potential transfers and a place to bring all the rumors that run rampant throughout the interwebs.
Definite needs (with most likely transfer if available):
Goalkeeper- David de Gea
Central Midfielder
Possible transfers out:
Owen Hargreaves- CM
Paul Scholes- CM
Wes Brown- CB/RB
Darren Gibson- CM
Michael Owen- ST
Dmitar Berbatov- ST
Tomasz Kuszczak- GK
Personally, I see Hargreaves, Scholes, Owen, and Kuszczak gone. I believe Gibson is given more time, Berbatov stays to fight for a place, and Brown stays as a squad player.
Currently on loan:
Tom Cleverley- Wigan- CM
Danny Welbeck- Sunderland- ST
Mame Biram Diouf- Blackburn- ST
Federico Macheda- Sampdoria- ST
Ritchie de Laet- Portsmouth- CB
Three young players to add to the attack makes it very likely that at least one of them moves on either on loan or as a transfer.
If there is a mistake up here or I forgot a player, please let me know and I will update it.
The only rule in this thread is the same as throughout the site: No personal attacks but feel free to let someone know if you disagree or think they are completely off-base with an idea. Try to keep this thread constructive.

I think Macheda
And Diouf are outta here. Don’t know how Macheda is doing and im can’t really be assed to find out… Gene um where are you lol
Oh and
I personally would like Berba to move on. I know you are going to say look at the goals he ha s scored, he’s had his best season yet…. But…… he doesn’t do it for me. He misses chances when we need him to come good. We should have been playing Stoke on Saturday if he put his chances away.
I agree.
I like his ability on the ball but he appears starved for service all too often. I think this is a reflection of not working back to find space to receive the ball, rather than a knock on the linking play of the midfielders. I think he’s been better in his limited opportunities during the second half of the season but I’m not sure he will consistently. The biggest reason I think he remains at Old Trafford is a lack quality bids. Is he worth 30m still? Obviously not, but I think he should be valued between 15-20 and I don’t expect a team will approach that number.
Macheda I can see leaving but why Diouf? I don’t think he’s been at United long enough to determine his worth moving forward. He had a decent run of games toward the beginning of the season for Blackburn, I believe.
Of all the players I would like to see United pursue on Spurs, VDV is not near the top. Where would he play? Rooney’s role? I can’t see him as an out and out CM like Carrick has been playing. Maybe Giggs role but even Giggs gets back to help defensively. I don’t ever remember seeing VDV track back for Spurs, but in fairness he may not be asked to do that in his current role. Give me Modric and I’ll be skipping around my basement in nothing but my Valencia jersey singing Glory, Glory Man United.
VDV has such a wicked left foot
He can play on the left or, as you say where Rooney plays. Now obviously, between VDV and ROoney, there is only 1 winner. But Rooney is flexable. He can play up top in Chica’s postion if need be with VDV in behind. And while I wouldn’t play him in the centre of the park regulary, I believe he could do a job there.
But again he will score you goals from anywhere within 30 yards, he can pick a pass, pick a cross and I also think he would be a player the fans would take too. He is also very adept at free kicks.

As for Diouf
I think he scored four for Blackburn in a game earlier in the season.
But for me, I just think he will lack something at the top level. I believe if he does stay, he will get a game here or there, maybe score when we are 4-0 up already, but it will just delay the inevitable. His first touch leaves a lot to be desired as well.

Keep it clean...
…no one wants to picture that. I sure hope you don’t sign Modric now. I’ll be scarred for life.
"The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they don't know the game" -Bill Shankly
I like Modric and Ash Young
I simply love Modric and I think he’s a great fit at Old Trafford. I could watch him play all day long…
As for Young, I like him not only for his quality, but for his versatility as well. We learned again this season how important depth is. What happens if Wazza gets injured again? Young is able to fill-in as a withdrawn striker… he’s also a fabulous winger as well. As long as he realizes he might not always be first-choice, but that he’ll still play quite a bit, he’d be a perfect fit here as well.
I think Bale is overpriced right now so I’d pass…
I really wanted Neuer the past few months but I’m warming up to the idea of de Gea.
For the price it would take to get Sneijder, I’d pass as well…
I’m intrigued by Goetze or Alexis Sanchez though.

Sanchez is a monster on FIfa 11
That kid has pace to burn. And he seems to be a real goal scorer. I doubt Fergie would buy him though, he would cost a hell of a lot of money.
by Sweet science on May 15, 2011 7:11 PM BST up reply actions
How much do you expect Sanchez to cost?
I see him as a less expensive alternative to Ashley Young. I have seen the number 15m thrown around for him. I would consider that a good value buy.
Young’s contract runs out next summer so I believe he would be cheaper. Where’s all manner of clubs are looking at Sanchez. So you would be looking at 25M+ IMO. He will end up in spain though

i'd love to see n'zogbia coming in this summer
i’m not sold on modric .
we need 2 new keepers , bains or enrique to replace evra , replacements for carrick ans scholes .
we have 3 wingers better than ashley young so i think we hold off on him also .
i’d like to replace berbatov with drogba . i think michael owen will also be gone .
cleverly and wellbeck will both be added to the squad next year .
if its for you it won't pass you
C’mon m8! We will never get Drogba. Why even mention it….
Maybe a replacement for Scholes, but Carrick has proved in the 2nd half of the season hsi worth to this team. And I was his harshest critic.
I do agree, to a point, about Modric. Fantastic player, but he does need to add a final product a little more often. EVen my Spurs m8 agreed with me on that. I certainly wouldn’t mind however if we did land him. Can’t see it though
by Sweet science on May 17, 2011 9:37 AM BST up reply actions
Ditto on...
Drogba. One, he’s creeping up on his mid-30s and would command too much money for that age. And two, I can’t imagine him in Manchester Red.
I do, however, think we’ve pretty much seen the last of Berbatov as a Red Devil. He’s world class when in good form but he’s wildly inconsistent. I mean, he’ll earn the Boot this year mostly based on a couple of hat tricks and that 5-goal shellacking he gave Sunderland.
I heard a weak rumor that Tottenham might get him back for Bale but I doubt they’d give him up especially to another English club.

carrick is not good enough for a united team
he made darren gibson look a good player and he was so bad ferguson had to put a 37 year old player in beside him to sure up the midfield .if giggs wasn’t playing midfield carrick would be lost
drogba may be a bit far fetched but he would be the best fit up front for the way united play .
picture him holding up the ball for rooney to run on to , flicking on balls for little pea , and being an unmarkable target for nani, park ,giggs and valencia crosses .
if its for you it won't pass you
Carrick has been the heartbeat of this side during the run-in....
and you could also say that Giggs has only looked good in a central role with someone like Carrick covering smartly for him.
Quite honestly, both have benefited from each other; its been both a surprising and mutually beneficial partnership.

he is still not good enough
every fan i talk to at matches want to imrpove the midfield and carrick is the player they want rid of
if its for you it won't pass you
everyone is entitled to their opinion...
and I’ve offered mine quite a bit on this site with thorough analysis on Carrick. I’m not claiming with 100% assertion that I’m correct because that would just make me an arrogant ass, but I do guarantee many of those that attack Carrick are numptees.
He certainly has his weaknesses… but he isn’t acclaimed enough for his strengths. And if he gets overrun by Barca and anyone uses that as exhibit A, I’ll point how many other world-class deep-lying playmakers that got their asses handed to them by Barca as well.
Some of the criticism of Carrick is certainly valid…. but one thing annoys quite a bit is lazy rhetoric… this criticism is that.

a lot of those so called numpties
have watch united from the stretford end for 50 years . they have seen players come and go but most are in agreement that carrick is not strong enough for a world class midfield ,which is what most fans want
if its for you it won't pass you
Carrick being consistently world-class is certainly debatable...
but he has been for this run-in and total body of work speaks for itself.
Obviously, I’m all for having the best possible players… but finding somebody, who might be marginally better than Carrick, is not an impossible task, but it is an extremely difficult one.
A holding player with tidy distribution and tactical awareness… one that trumps Carrick doesn’t grow on trees. In the modern game, his role is an extremely difficult one. In fact, his role probably takes on more significance now than it has at any time over the past 50 years.

there are lots of players better than carrick in the premier league
arteta and rodwell would make united midfield stronger and thats just one team in the league .
n’zogbia and james mc carthy from wigan would also be upgrades over carrick .
i’m not hating on carrick i just think he is the weak link in our midfield .
valencia , park ,giggs and carrick . to get better we need to replace carrick , but i will agree he has improved over the season but i put that down to having giggs beside him more than him turning into a wonderful player

As for Carrick. Since January he has done just fine. 4 Premier league titles….. Terrible player

Fergie keen on making 3 signings...
Obviously one will be a goalkeeper and one other is possibly Raphael Varane (see our front page). I would think the third would be an attacker… either winger or a central attacking midfield type (Ash Young fits both here)

"ROOOONEY!.... It defies description. How about spectacular?...How about superb?"
so at this point, my best guess is...
- David de Gea (GK) — £17.5 million estimated
- Ashley Young (winger, withdrawn striker) — £15 million estimated
- Raphael Verane (center-back, holding midfielder) — £8 million estimated
Total transfer budget of roughly £40 million in this scenario. Be interesting to see if any possible departing players would bring us back any money. Possibly only Berbatov, but only at a fraction of what we bought him for.

What do you all think about Charlie Adam? He’d be a good pickup to shore up the midfield and as we all saw today, he has quite the free kick ability too
His set peices is what most appeal to me

I see him as a left-footed Darren Fletcher in terms of open play ability.
Good tackler out of an advanced midfield role and not afraid to do the dirty work necessary to grind out a result.
sounds like we'll be jeering him soon enough...

If fergie says we are going to sign 3 players, id imagine we’l sign keeper, defender, midfielder.
i think after Edwin and Gary leave/retire paul scholes may also follow, we may also let Brown, Carrick, and Berba go along with Diouf and Owen.
But if Diouf,Berba and Owen go it will surely mean a new striker has to come in either this season or the next….for me we will either sign a top quality player ala Chicarito who is young n may come through quickly..or no-one at all…more than likely none at all and we go with Rooney Chicarito Welbeck and Maceda…with Maceda having to prove himself.
But for Striker……id say Cavani all day long…can also play wide but looks the perfect frontman and is on fire.
Goalkeeper has to be De Gea, now that Neuer has stated he is on his way to Bayern in the biggest worst kept secret in football. De Gea for me is still young and lacks experience, and a huge move like this could be alot for him at the moment…so maybe VDS becomes number 3 (emergency) or we sign another keeper….Paul Robinson? in awesome form towards the end of the season and only 29 could be just what we need to allow De Gea the time to grow.
Defense i beleive will almost certainly be Raphel Varane…huge and technichally gifted lad.
Midfield is intresting…im predicting big things for tat young lad called Giggs.:) but honestly it has to be Sneider…it will never be van der vaart….if you notice he exploded in england then got injured and hasnt come back the same….id guess he is carrying a long term injury that led Real to let him go…he normally completes 60 odd mins for totenham then comes off…and is struggling to recapture the heights he did..dont get me wrong he is awesome but i think he is being held back by injury.
so id imagine if Sneider cant/wont come we will look elsewhere.
for me Dzagoev would be a quality signing…has a great attitude and work ethic and fergie would love that.
so in all
De Gea/Robinson for goalkeeper
Varane for Defender
Sneider/Dazagoev for Midfielder
and cavani if we let Berba go.
Cavani? Why spend 40mil+ on a third striker?
I can think of better places to pour that kind of money. I don’t see any way another striker comes in unless Berba leaves. Then its only going to be in a situation similar to Chicarito where a young player is brought in AT A REASONABLE PRICE.
I wouldn't be surprised to see you linked to Pastore quite a bit
He seems a perfect fit in that system

believe me i dont think it would ever happen…just throwing it into the mix….edwin wants to go and the time is right..he is still a top class keeper, and for me if he was still playing id see no reason for him not to be number 1…but all im suggesting is that i could see a situation where he could stay around the club…doing some coaching and helping de gea settle in (as de gea states him as his role model.)i mean are you suggesting he WONT be around once n a while to help de gea?i think fergie will do everytin he can to make de gea’s transition to united number one a seamless one…after all we dont want another schmeichel situation.and in case you didnt read my post properly…i said ‘i think after Edwin and Gary leave/retire….’
Yes
I believe Edwin would be a very valuable GK coach. His qualities as a keeper is positioning and descision making, and if he can breed them into De Gea… Im all for it
But a coach is not a number 3.
I don’t think Edwin will like the idea either. I think he would rather go out at the top (For instance, a champions league final at wembely). Not playing Norwich City at Carrow road

defo
i dont think vds would be number three either? just a suggestion for comment…vds is gone..kuschak will follow as he’s never staked a claim…so this leaves a hole…i beleive de gea, lindergaard and Amos will be the three, all im sayin is that possibly untied could of retained his registration, allowing him to retire effectivly but continue training and become more a coach with the option to play if we neded him..all this pont is mute as he is a 40 year old man and wants the break to enjoy his family, and who can blame him.but the point is really…de gea is 20! incredibly talented but 20! he should be given the time he needs but also as much support as the club and fans can give him.
van der sar is gone
his wife is ill and he has promised her they would move back to holland .
as much as i would love him as a coach it’s not going to happen

I have read 2 separate articles linking United with Nasri.
I don’t know what to think of that. I am just starting to warm up to the idea of Sneijder as a target so not sure if I could appreciate a move for Nasri.

that is my point when i post on here . people say we won’t sign drogba but those same people would have also said we would never sign owen . a player like drogba would link up the way united play and make us a far better team than we are now . he is 30+ but still the best in the world at what he does . alan hansen says on his day "drogba is unmarkable "
ferguson will leave no stone unturned when it comes to finding talent but some of the players linked with united at the moment are simply not good enough . young is o.k but no more than that , i’d rather nani and valencia as our wingers . a player i would like to see come to united is schwinstiger from munich , he would make our milfield a lot stronger and i wouldn’t mind rodwell but he won’t make an impact for a few years yet . someone like de rossi from roma who was actually born in manchester could also be another player who would improve our team .

this appears to be heating up...
It makes sense to me that Fergie would make an approach with genuine intention, it’s probably just a matter if Spurs are willing to deal… and if so, reasonably deal. Modric has a long-contract and he’s hitting him prime years. Nothing south of £20m will likely get him.
I like Modric in our midfield. If Rooney continues to play withdrawn in a partnership with Chicharito, then Modric a good fit in that he doesn’t occupy the same space. He can be the possession player in the middle if he’s partnered by a holding player (Carrick and/or somebody new —Rodwell?)

Agreed.
I really like Modric and would be pumped if United brought in him, Young, and a solid young keeper. I think we see more changes than just those 3 moving in but anything else would icing on the cake.
berba will be used in any deal for spurs players
not sold on modric . would rather defoe as i see him as a potential world class striker playing for united. bale would also be a great buy .
if its for you it won't pass you
Why?
Wouldn’t a speedy striker like Defoe be redundant when we have a speedy striker like Chicharito?
Bale is a great buy, but not at 50M. A. Young at 15M is much cheaper and cost-efficient than Bale at 50M.
Modric/Rooney/Chicharito would be quite a tandem in attack, especially alongside Nani/Valencia down the wings.

no i'm not

if its for you it won't pass you
you pay for quality
ashley young isn’t worth 15m , bale can win games on his own .its like comparing a sedan (young) to a corvette ( bale), you pay for quality , but i agree i wouldn’t pay 50m for him , maybe 35m
what has modric done this year for spurs?
would he be a decent replacement for scholes ? probably ,but having to pay 25M for an average player who hasn’t really done much in 3 years in the premier league is a massive risk …. remins me of when we paid over the top for another so-called world calss player in veron
why not have a player like defoe ? pace is never redundant in the premier league . i see him more as a cross between rooney and chicharito wher he has lots of pace but can also score rooney type of goals from 30 yards out
if its for you it won't pass you
We’ll agree to have differing opinions on that then. Modric not doing anything in the last 3 years is ludicrous. Modric is probably the most influential player for the Spurs. When we played them, Bale was shut down, and it was Modric who was driving his team on. Especially given VDV’s tendency to get injured, he’s probably the one player the Spurs can LEAST afford to lose.
If you’re talking about one-hit wonders, isn’t Bale more of a one-hit wonder? He’s always been “good” but not even great, until the last year and a half. His stock really took off in the second half of the last season, and what if we get the Bale from the second half of this season? Granted he was recovering from an injury, but you can’t pick and choose when you’re trying to prove 1 point, and use the opposite argument when you try to prove your next point.

how many games have you watched modric play?
because even some of my spurs friens don’t rate him that highly
if its for you it won't pass you
Modric is top quality
He treats the ball like treasure.

I prefer to pass on a guy that plays a wide role and chips in with a total of 1 assist in a year.
Especially when said individual is going for £50million and has had hamstring problems for 2 straight years.
Give me Ashley Young at a third of the price and the ability to move into a withdrawn role as well all day long.
Young has done it consistently
for about 3 season’s too.

If he can’t crack the starting 11 in front of Pavyluchenko and Crouch… he really does have issues.
Frequent visitor to Nucks Misconduct.
but that is just harry redknapp's opionion of him
chris smalling wasn’t a regular for fulham , doesn’t mean he isn’t good enough .
robben wasn’t good enough for real madrid either .
if its for you it won't pass you
soooo
it still doesn’t change the fact that good players can be left on the bench irrespective of age
if its for you it won't pass you
But it does make the point that a United or Bayern would be willing to take a gamble on a young player to leave on the bench while they develop further. Robben is a reach in this argument anyway since he played in 29 La Liga games his last year with the squad.
what is the upside of Defoe? i would rather have Michael Owen at this point.
quite honestly...
Defoe isn’t even worth discussing. I propose to drop the ludicrous topic

you pay for quality
ashley young isn’t worth 15m , bale can win games on his own .its like comparing a sedan (young) to a corvette ( bale), you pay for quality , but i agree i wouldn’t pay 50m for him , maybe 35m
what has modric done this year for spurs?
would he be a decent replacement for scholes ? probably ,but having to pay 25M for an average player who hasn’t really done much in 3 years in the premier league is a massive risk …. remins me of when we paid over the top for another so-called world calss player in veron
why not have a player like defoe ? pace is never redundant in the premier league . i see him more as a cross between rooney and chicharito wher he has lots of pace but can also score rooney type of goals from 30 yards out
if its for you it won't pass you
I understand that Charlie Adam played really well this year, but I just can’t see him with the same influence on a team as deep in talent as ours.

I have the same worry
But he is sick at dead ball’s. Something we lack. He’s someone that if Fergie sign’s him, I will trust his judgement

but if Henderson does go to Liverpool I would be ecstatic with Darron Gibson moving to Sunderland as his replacement
Getting anything for Wes Brown is just a bonus.
I will be so pissed
I would be more pissed about Wes Brown leaving. I enjoyed watching Suarez torment him, but in all seriousness, dear God would that be an awful business deal. There is no way you can convince me that Henderson is worth the same or more than Ashley Young. Sorry, not trolling, but I enjoy reading the stuff from the otherside from time to time. Hopefully I don’t stir up more crazy talk with my Ashley Young comment.
"The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they don't know the game" -Bill Shankly
Touché
That was more desperation. But hey, Carroll was still more productive than Torres. However, back to my other argument, I don’t see how they are even close in valuation. The transfer market has been f-ed up ever since Real payed £80m for your Greg Louganis.
Henderson is maybe worth a Defoe, but not Young. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

agree on Young
If money is equal, I’d rather have Ash Young, despite Henderson’s youth. But I’ve also made it no secret here that I rate Young very high – likely higher than the average person.

Good piece by Michael Cox on Ashley Young
The piece echoes my sentiments on Young. The finishing paragraph I feel is very good.
“He’s not a world-class footballer by any means, but he is certainly adaptable and versatile. As most clubs look to cut spending, he becomes a valuable footballer to have in your squad.”

Young got himself a goal on a half-volley in England's Euro qualifier.
He came on at halftime and really energized the side.
He's turned in a few perfomances for England recenlty
Probably why I am happy we are getting him

was surprised that he didn't start
Capello should consider moving on from the days of Gerrard and Lampard.
Depending on who you’re playing, he could use a similar shape to Fergie’s 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1.
Bent can stretch the defense similarly to Chicharito, have Rooney play in his playmaking role. Use 2 of these 3 this summer out wide: Young, Walcott, and Downing. Wilshere partnered with either Parker/Milner/Carrick in the middle.
Perhaps this is because I think John Terry is the scum of the earth, but Rio should’ve never been stripped of the captain’s armband. I’d prefer Gary Cahill or Michael Dawson to Terry right now.

Cappello ain't half conservative
Milner has not done a lot apart from running this season. At home, you need more. So yes Young should have started.#
I think Sturridge should be called up soon if he continues his impressive form next season. (So if he is at Chelsea, he has no chance)

I certainly don't like Milner as a wide attacker
Young likely would’ve provided more in Milner’s spot had he started there. Wazza and Young did well in England’s last match as the wide attackers

Nasri becoming more of a possibility?
Still not sure what I would think of this move IF it ever happened.
versatile and talented
might fit in nice… he can play as a central playmaker in a 3-man midfield or as a wide player that likes to drift inward. He’s out of contract next season so he could potentially be a bargain.

I still doubt Wenger will let him got to a club in England
But he would be a great buy
Where would he play though, out wide?? I can’t see him playing in the middle with only one alongside him…. food for thought

Surprised no one has brought up Hamsik yet
He’d be my choice to “replace” Scholesy. He’s got everything you’d want out of a central midfielder, vision, pace, intelligence, durability and a cannon of a foot. He’s been a big part of the reason that Napoli finished 3rd in Serie A.

I completely agree but I'm still butthurt.
I’m actually hoping this is Harry trying to push the price up…….but I doubt it.
It won't be Harry pushing the price up
It will be market inflation after Liverpool’s crazy money spending. I still can’t figure out why we needed another CM at £20m and are still going after Adam after Henderson’s signing.

Hey
Can I have your honest opinion on Lucas?
I feel he is a poor man’s Carrick, in that he seems to do very little. I don’t mean to take the piss here, but I would just like to hear your thoughts about him
Cheers

That's a loaded question
I think that he may have cost us the title a few years ago when we finished second through poor tackles and poor play. He was so bad for so long that it is tough to forget. His decision making was horrible and he put in some awful tackles that had dire consequences. I absolutely hated him and thought he might have had naked pictures of Rafa and he was using them to blackmail Rafa into starting him so much. I cringed everytime I saw him on the pitch. He was nearly every Liverpool fan’s scapegoat and I seriously doubt they sold too many Lucas jerseys until this year.
That being said, he has completely turned around this past season. It is like someone flicked a switch. His passing and vision have been fantastic and he has finally learned that sometimes it is more effective to slow someone down and wait for reinforcements than to make a rash challenge. I think the majority of it was all mentality, although I did question his ability for a long time and wanted him sold every transfer window. With the new shape of the line up (having a more defined/restricted role as a holding mid) I think has helped him settle. He was definitely at his worst when he was played alongside Mascherano, which is why I think he needs a very defined role.
He has been with Liverpool since ‘07 and Rafa would always argue that it takes time to settle and he needed games. However, even with his good play this season, that is an excessive amount of time to settle. He was voted the LFC fans player of the year by Liverpool fans so I guess most people have gotten behind him. I won’t lie, I kept waiting every game all year for him to slip up, but to his credit, he had very few bad games. I guess next season will tell if it was a fluke. To sum it up, I am hopeful he will continue, but still slightly skeptical. I hope this wasn’t too long.

Great reply
Im with Gene in that I think he has had a better season, from what I have seen. I still think he is not someone you should start regulary if you have realistic ambitions to win a title (which I think you have a good shot with the investment)
Great quote from Bill Shankly too.
