Manchester United transfer rumors: David De Gea undergoing a medical at United
Manchester United may be closing in on their third summer signing as Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea underwent a medical on Monday afternoon. It has long been speculated that the U-21 Spain international would be making a move to Old Trafford this summer to replace the retired Edwin van der Sar. The transfer fee, which will be a reported £17.6-million, pushes manager Sir Alex Ferguson's summer spending to around £50-million total thus far after splashing cash for Ashley Young and Phil Jones as well.
De Gea's talent is obvious as he's an excellent shot stopper and he shows good command in the air - the latter of which is vital in the English Premier League. An obvious concern would be his age - the 20-year-old will be succeeding one of the all-time great goalkeepers in United's history. However, the Spaniard is considered to be modest and poised and he has even drawn comparisons to van der Sar as teammates in the past have dubbed him "van der Gea." United supporters will surely hope finding a successor to the retired Dutchman goes much smoother than the transition from Peter Schmeichel's departure - it took six years before van der Sar was brought in to bring stability between the posts for United.

I think De Gae will be a fantastic fit at United.
He is a great young goalkeeper who will only get better and better over the coming years. I feel there is little chance he will be anything other than fantastic, and no chance of him becoming for example somebody of Massimo Taibi’s lowly status. If he signs I will be very happy we are continuing a long tradition of United having fantastic keepers (Schmeichel, van der Sar etc.).

I'm pretty sure
Massimo Taibi is a bad word round these parts.

By all accounts, De Gea is immensely talented. My biggest concern, with him being only 20-years-old, is whether he can command his defense and not have lapses in concentration. This isn’t to say that he can’t do it, I just hope the task isn’t too grand for a goalkeeper to provide this for a club that expects to win trophies on a yearly basis.
As brilliant as van der Sar was, the one thing I appreciated most about him was his consistency. He certainly made some spectacular saves… but more importantly for a goalkeeper, he rarely let in soft goals.

Plus 1
20 years old is young for a player, but for a keeper… he’s like a new born. The talent is there, lets see how he copes mentally
I think Jones will be great though

20 isn't that young
for a major talent in European football. Especially since we have Rio and Vida to help the young keeper. They will help get him up to speed with the type of communication they like in a keeper which will stand him in good stead. Iker Casillas was doing just fine for a pretty big club when he was 19 or 20. If that talent is there Fergie will get the most out of it.

Commited to their job 110%
Love how well the Old Trafford staff blanketed De Gea and the woman from photographers. (We’re seeing the evidence of how well that worked out.) Way to work that white blankie!
Seeing how things go
we might actually see what some NHL teams do in using dual starting keepers. I know we haven’t seen a lot of Anders but Steele was very high on him and may be used as Van Der Gea’s help during the year as to not overload the kid.
I know I was skeptical at first but after looking at all the highlight videos of him, the kid definitely seems legit. To me this is really starting to look like Fergie’s Fledglings part Deux. The Brazilian Nevilles, Smalling, Jones, Cleverly (I’m super high on this kid), Welbeck, De Gea, Morrison (if he can get his act together), Kiko Mecheda, Pogba (high hopes for this kid), Petrucci, King……..the list goes on and on.
For those of you that don’t get to follow the reserves and academy players definitely check out….. Quite a brilliant site that allows you inside in to the youth matches and writeups.

Cleverly
Really hope he does well. I’m hoping he can play a big part this year and even bigger in years to come.

Satisfied
The kid has proven thus far he can play in big games. That’s enough for me to be optimistic.

Yeah
At the moment, if we don’t win any trophies, I don’t believe it will be because of the keeper. I believe it will be because of the midfield and the creativity we need with regards to offense.
Can SAF convert a current player to that spot? Park perhaps? Young? Is that a spot we can get away with dedicating somebody in house to take over? Have we done that in the past? I know Rooney took on a new role….but he’s a special type of player.
I’d be interested to hear your (and others) opinion on this.
Facing Barce/Real 4 times a season, and not getting lit up, is sign enough for me that he’s quality. :P

OH PS
I Hope that’s next year’s GK kit. The Nike GK kits from last year were horrendous. I don’t think even Campos would have worn something that ugly.
