I had forgot about Cleverly
If I remember correctly he was playing pretty good for Wigan this year and then got injured. He was scoring goals and setting people up (from what i heard, I in fact did not see him play). So he is another player that could step up into the center of midfield this year. I would prefer Modric, obviously, but if Cleverly, or someone else for that matter, steps up more power to that person.
It seems like Modric and Nasri are no go's
And Wesley Sneijder deal is green and red every other second depending on who you ask. If Sneijder is a no go, what does Man U do then? Do they try and go again at Bastian Shweinstiger? It seems like he is unwilling to leave Bayern Munich. United need to reload in the midfield, I think we would all agree, who is out there for United to get? Realistically speaking.

With Hamsik out of the picture as well...
(Napoli putting a crazy pricetag on his head) it’s looking more and more like the spot is open for a youth player to grab…Pogba, Morrison, Cleaverly, Petrucci are all possibilities.

I am also guessing that Jack Rodwell is officially out of the picture as well.
Not that he is a creator, but it seemed like he was always heavily linked to Man United. Is he overrated, underrated or just rated?
Roll Bass and War Ryno for me
A lot of EPL fans have a pretty high opinion of him
I’m not that big of a fan though. After he got injured mid season he didn’t come back to well and looked kind of ‘meh if that makes sense. Hard for me personally to say how he’s rated. I could see him turning in to a very servicable and dependable mid fielder but then again he could be the next Liam Miller as well.

I am ignorant to Soccer
I have only been watching for a year, so I honestly do not know who Liam Miller is, I take that is a good thing though. Could coaching from Fergie make a huge difference?

lol not really
Fergie bought him a while ago and he was touted as Keano’s replacement…..let’s just say that’s not what happened….he played a whopping nine games in United colors!

Christian Eriksen
Apparently Fergie has been looking at him as a possible signing if Sneijder falls through. I would love to get him considering he’s only 19 and considered one of the top prospects in Europe.
-DD-
How much would he cost?
He seemed to be a rising star before the under-21’s began.
Roll Bass and War Ryno for me
I would almost rather have Eriksen. Eriksen and Cleverley could easily man the midfield for 10 years (thats an imo based on what i’ve seen of them both and they amount of progress they’ve had in my eyes over the last two years and yes, Eriksen has been linked in the past).
by Caviarhound on Jul 18, 2011 11:39 PM BST up reply actions
Agreed
Getting a 19 year old Eriksen for 25 mil rather than a 27 year old Sneijder for 30 mil would be just fine with me. I haven’t seen a whole lot of Cleverly but from what i have seen I like him. And I watched Eriksen against England earlier this year and was very impressed.

I’d argue that a little bit.
Eriksen is a great prospect, no doubt. But at 25M, he seems like a even more risky proposition than Sneijder. At least you know what your’e going to get with Wesley. Ericksen is much younger, and you would be betting the 25M on his potential. Yes, I agree that he’s pretty close to a sure thing, but we’ve also seen our share of young stars flame out in the spotlight that is OT. And relying on Cleverly/Eriksen as the creative tandem gives us very little experience in that role.

I agree Sneijder is more of a sure thing. If the Sneijder deal falls through I have no problem getting Eriksen though. And i’m not talking about having Cleverly and Eriksen in the midfield all year, but for years to come it could be a pretty stellar tandem.
-DD-
I don't really see the desire to add Sneijder at that price
He’s a very good player, but 25-30 million for him at the age of 27 is probably poor business with FFP looming and the amount of debt the club have. That would be the first poor buy of an otherwise very good transfer window for United.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jul 19, 2011 4:59 PM BST up reply actions
Ericksen though would still be a great buy at 20-25 million.
Even if he busts, there will still be a smaller club willing to take a flier on his potential (as he’ll still be young) for a good chunk of that transfer fee. If he’s a hit, the club gets another contract or two without a transfer fee. With FFP looming clubs really need to buy young, something United have done really well and Liverpool are doing very poorly.

“Forget it,” Ferguson said of a possible move for Sneijder. “We are looking at some things but I am not so sure Sneijder will be easy to get. I could pick three or four players to come in but they wouldn’t be good enough for us, so there is no point.”

man city looking to swap tevez for sneijder
united linked with some 20 year old brazilian ganso touted as the new kaka who plays for santos ( the same team as chelsea target neymar ) to replace paul scholes
http://www.givemefootball.com/premier-league/united-re-enter-race-for-samba-starlet-reports
If you haven't seen him yet, Ganso is unbelievable
Here’s the getting to know him I did for WAGNH. Since I wrote that in March he’s become a regular starter for Brazil’s first 11 (ahead of Kaka) and has had a 25 million Euro bid by AC Milan turned down. Like Neymar, it sounds like they want to keep him until after the club world cup this winter.

my thoughts on our new signings so far
for me the jury is still out . de gea will be our most important signing this year . how he plays will determine how many tropies we will win . replacing van der sar will be a though ask and i wonder will he have it in him to step in and play well from the start.
the english press are very harsh when it comes to goalkeeper mistakes and if de gea make any in his first few games he will be under enormous pressure for the rest of the season .
i’m not seeing how jones will contribute much this year and i think he will be more of a john o’shea squad type player next season
ashley young could also be hit or miss as i don’t see him as a better player than what we have on the wings already .
for the money ferguson has spend we still have a lot of question marks hanging over the team , i’m sure in years to come we will all say money weel spent for all 3 guys but until they play a good few games for us all 3 players still have huge risk attached to them
Good stuff
The £££ spent on these guys will put them under the spotlight immediately. This is probably fair to Young as he’s an established player and because de Gea is the new No 1, it’s probably fair as well. You make some very good points on what might happen if de Gea has a shocker in August or September. I hope people are patient with Jones.

Fergie said saturday night that for Centre midfield
He is looking at combinations from our current squad and he is not looking to sign anyone else.
I find that very worrysome if thats true. We need more flair in the centre of the park.
i also heard a roumour that we were looking at joey barton
this is another big worry.
how can we close the gap on barca if we still have an average midfield ?
Why so he can
put cigars out in Pogba’s head?
Seriously though when I heard the comment made that no more signings my stomach dropped. The only thing positive to take from it is he’s said that in the past when he’s ended up purchasing a player. Berba comes to mind.

Life Through My Lens
This whole idea of
“closing the gap” on Barca is faulty. They have the two best central midfield players in the world. So even if we got the next best two we would still be lagging behind. I don’t think Fergie has to rush out and throw money at our central midfield area just to give the appearance that we are “closing the gap” and he knows it. He is too shrewd to just give money away on a problem without a solution. We have Giggs, Young, Cleverley and Rooney who can play an attacking central midfield type role and then behind that we have Carrick, Anderson, Fletcher (hopefully) and Park can always play in the center of the pitch. So we have good depth. We can win the Champions League with the squad we have at this point.

inter milan beat them with a good midfield
the fact we have an average at best midfield doesn’t help when we are on the same pitch as barca . we have a far better defence and having a better midfield would go a long way to matching barca when we play them .
fabragas is obiously good enough for barca and they see him as a replacement for xavi so why not try and sign him ? not saying arsenal would sell him to us but they don’t seem too pushed with the way barca are going after fabragas . if we offered 40m then barca would be out of the running as they wouldn’t pay that much money . i’d also see him as a better signing than snejider at 35m .
We won't get Fabragas
We won’t even try.

We can win the CL
But we can’t be Barca. If they get knocked out, we can win without a doubt. If we play them, I think we lose every time.
-DD-
We can beat anyone
on any day. If we played Barca 100 times we wouldn’t lose 100 times. We’d lose probably 65-70 times. We did beat them over two legs a couple years ago. It’s possible to beat them. I’d love to take them on with Fletcher in the line up. And lets be really honest. The goals we allowed in the final were soft. Backing off Messi? Of course he is going to score. We made a couple small errors that they punished. That doesn’t mean they are going to beat us every time we play them.

A tale of two quotes
from Fergie
SIR Alex Ferguson doubts whether he will sign any more players before Manchester United face their neighbours in the Community Shield at Wembley next month after admitting that the player he really wants is “not available”.
I hope that’s Marek!
from David Gill
“Nothing’s happening – nothing imminent – on that at the moment, but we’ll see what happens when we get home.
“There’ll still be 31 days of the transfer window to see if anything develops. But I’m not working on anything at the moment, in that respect.”

This got me thinking though. Would it be worth overpaying for Sneijder if it meant Inter would then sign Tevez? United gets a much needed central playmaker while causing City to lose their best player in the process. Thoughts?
On a side note, sorry for my lacking of links and participation lately.
I’ve been playing Navy for 3 weeks and been busy down in Norfolk, VA. LImited internet accessibility has been tough.
Interesting thought. Paying extra to make City lose their most influential player.. and thus weakening our rivals….
An Aguero/Tevez forward line could be devastating if they could work together….. but judging by the way the Argentines fared in Copa America.. that’s no guarantee.

Double whammy
The Manchester United website is citing sources from the"The Mirror" that INter and United have agreed on a 30 million euro/pound(?can’t tell I assume euro) transfer fee. Sneijder now needs to settle on weekly fees.
Also, PSG is apparently offering 18 million euros for Berbatov. IF that is true I would not even think twice about it. WIth Rooney, Chicha, Welbeck, Macheda, and Owen(I guess) I would sell Berbatov.

€30m seems cheap based on the rumors leading up to this.
That’s almost as much as we paid for Jordan Henderson (shakes head in disappointment).

Agreed
I think the big games (Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal[ha], maybe Man City) and Europe is where they need him. If Man United win the Champions League and Sneijder is the big reason, I don’t think anyone would complain.

End of the day we need someone to really control the midfield in the big games
You don’t want Rooney dropping to deep, because the further he drops, the less effective he will become
Cleverly does not have the experience yet. Now if we can wing it like last season where we still win the league and get to the CL final without a midfield playmaker, then I will be happy. But that is quite a big if.
Is Wesley the answer? Il leave that to Fergie. I won’t be unhappy if we get him. Qute the opposite. I won’t be too dissapointed if we don’t get him though.
I want someone though to sure up that midfield
Not Barton though!

The more I think about it the more I believe
unless you sign a player that has a year or two left (nothing more) we’ll be losing Cleaverly.
Pique – Vida signed and Pique knew he wasn’t going to get any real spell of games behind Vida and Rio.
Rossi – Knew he wasn’t going to be featuring full time in the first team so he went back to Italy.
Both are now top quality players with their respective clubs. I just get the feeling this is going to happen again and I’d hate to lose him.
Sniejder for 5 years < Cleaverly for 10+ years.
He played brilliant last year for Wigan and has looked fantastic this preseason. Did anyone catch his work in last night’s “game” vs OM? He was easily the best player on the field in the first half.
My photography blog...check it out and tell me what you think.

One BIG difference you are missing though
is Pique is Spanish and went back to Spain. Rossi was of Italian heritage and went back to Italy. And no matter how well Rossi played/plays Fergie never used the buy back clause so he clearly didn’t feel that he was really good enough for United. Cleverley is from England. I doubt he goes back to Bradford or Basingstoke or whether the eff he is from. I don’t think there is as much of a risk of him leaving as with those two guys. Especially when you consider positions. SAF usually doesn’t, or he didn’t in the past, like to rotate CBs very much. He likes a settled pair znd usually only one or two strikers play in a game. Rossi was not getting in ahead of the guys we had. Central midfield is another story entirely. And Tom can play out wide as well. That gives him more chance to get into more games. Carrick is 30 and probably a season or two away from moving on. Fletcher might have the plague. Anderson has been somewhat injury prone/loses form and Giggs is 145 years old. Central midfield is an area where getting playing time if you are in form won’t be as hard as some other spots.

Rossi went to Spain, not Italy.
He was loaned to an Italian club for 6 months but was never sold to them. (Parma, I believe) I think the buy-back clause is only when Villareal sell him so that hasn’t even been an option yet.
Cleaverly could just as easily transfer to a mid-table EPL club for increased 1st team opportunities as opposed to going abroad.
With both of those above statements said, I agree that the situation is different than with Pique and Rossi. I think Cleaverly would be more likely to stay with a Sneijder type brought in as opposed to the other two examples. He’s young enough that even another year long loan probably wouldn’t put him off, but I’d rather him stay in the squad and develop at Old Trafford.
Spain and Italy
its all the same shit

If he does sign, book the the treble. A midfield of him with Fletcher and Cleverley and a front of Rooney, Nani, Young or Rooney Valencia Park would be sweet.

Its all kind of annoying.
I think everyone would love to have him, but this deal either needs to get done or not get done. Having said that, I honestly believe he is that last piece to the puzzle. Also I was watching the 08 Champions League Final, Rooney can play at the wing and you could still start Hernandez, not that I would, in a 4-3-3. I think they need him for depth and for success in Europe.

I think that if United don’t sign up Sneijder then next summer or in January if Dortmund is out of the Champions League then they should try to get Götze.
