Manchester United Football Club Primer
I'm excited as a pig in filth for the season to start -- officially on August 13 but unofficially the Sunday prior when United takes on City in the FA Community Shield.
The Community Shield fixture traditionally pits the past season's winner of the English Premier League (EPL) against the past season's winner of the FA Cup.
And thus begins the point of this little piece. I've been wandering around the various EPL blogs out of boredom and curiousity to see what kind of community they have and how it stacks up to my extended footy family here at The Busby Babe.
I ended up seeing a lot of "new fan, would like to know more"-type fanposts. And in fact, there have been a few newcomers around these parts as well. And bully for that. The more, the merrier I say.
I remember being a new fan to the EPL. Fortunately for me, when I begin to like something, I devour every bit of information I can get my hands on. I become obsessed. So my passion, loyalty, and knowledge betrays the scant, few years I have been following the Red Devils.
But for those new fans who don't have the awful OCD compulsion I have, here is a quick rundown of some facts about the greatest football club in the world.
Manchester United Football Club (MUFC)
Also known as The Red Devils, the Reds, or simply United. The latter two are appropriate when it's understood that MUFC is being discussed as The Reds also refers to Liverpool FC and United could mean any number of teams (Newcastle, West Ham, etc.)
Founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) as a way for the employees of the railway company to have fun and keep fit.
In 1902, the name was changed to Manchester United Football Club after a change in management.
They are currently managed by Sir Alex Ferguson and captained by Nemanja Vidić.
If I may recommend, The Official Illustrated History of Manchester United 1878-2010: The Full Story and Complete Record (http://www.amazon.com/Official-Illustrated-History-Manchester-1878-2010/dp/1847379109/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311183436&sr=8-1) is an absolute must have for Red Devils supporters new and old alike. And at only 20 USD, it's almost literally a steal.
Old Trafford
The nearly-80,000 capacity grounds that United has called home for over 100 years (minus eight years due to World War II). "The Theatre of Dreams," it's known as and I want nothing more than to see my boys play there live and in person.
I'm told there is something in the air when you go inside, a sort of electricity that comes from the spirits of the men that became legends on that pitch.
Divided by North, South, East, and West Stands, it is the latter, also known as Stretford End, that gets the most publicity due to the banners that hang there.
One of the most famous is the banner mocking cross-town rivals (and mercenary wankers) Manchester City. It was a running count of how long the squad had gone without a major trophy. Their triumph in the 2010-11 FA Cup forced the banner into retirement. It was replaced by a "019" banner that will serve as a running count of how many times United has won England.
Other famous banners include tributes to former manager Sir Matt Busby, former player Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and current player Ryan Giggs.
The Munich Air Disaster
On February 6, 1958 after a the first leg of their quarterfinal match-up with Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup (the previous incarnation of the UEFA Champions League), Sir Matt Busby and his team of "Busby Babes," a nickname given to the young homegrown squad, along with several other reporters, supporters, etc. were involved in a plane crash that was caused by a build up of slush on the runway.
Of the 44 people on board, 23 lost their life that afternoon. Eight United players would end up losing their lives as a result. "The Flowers of Manchester" as they became known to be are as follows: Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Coleman, Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor, and Liam Whelan.
United dropped from second place to ninth by the end of the English season and were eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual winner Real Madrid in the European Cup. They captured England's hearts when the decimated team full of reserves made it to the FA Cup Final but could not overcome the odds.
Ten years later, Busby would capture the European Cup.
The Treble
In just about every country that has association football, there is a league and at least one cup, the winner of which is decided with a tournament.
In England, there is the EPL and the FA Cup (in addition to the League Cup but let's just stick to basics for now). Winning both -- the most recent case is that of Chelsea in the 2009/10 season -- is a major feat as a team has to essentially play on two fronts: maintain or improve their position in the EPL standing will continuing to advance in the cup tournament.
Besides the two prizes, there are continental cup tournaments that the elite teams play for. England, being a member of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), gets four spots in the UEFA Champions League (CL). Those spots go to the top four teams in the EPL the season prior.
So based on the results of the 2010/11 season, United, Chelsea, City, and Arsenal all earn berths in the European tournament. Arsenal, by virtue of being fourth, begins play in the tournament one round before the former three.
United -- since the changeover to the UEFA Champions League format in the 1992/93 season -- has played in every CL minus two. So for nearly two decades, the Red Devils have played on three fronts: EPL, FA Cup, and CL.
In 1999, they achieved what only three squads before and two squads since have accomplished and won all three. The Treble as its known is an achievement reserved only for teams with depth, tenacity, and skill. It's a rare accomplishment that puts United on par with teams such as FC Barcelona and Internazionale Milan.
Since then, United has reached the CL Finals three times, winning in 2008 but losing to Barca in 2009 and 2011.
Kings of England
United has won the championships in England's top flight (the highest level of football) a record 19 times. 19!!! They clinched that record breaking title last season (2010/11) and surpassed Liverpool's 18.
1907/08, 1910/11, 1951/52, 1955/56, 1956/57, 1964/65, 1966/67, 1992/93, 1993/94, 1995/96, 1996/97, 1998/99, 1999/00, 2000/01, 2002/03, 2006/07, 2007/08, 2008/09, 2010/11
"Are ya watchin', are ya watchin', are ya watchin' Merseyside, Merseyside?" - sung anytime we giving a pounding to Liverpool FC and sung especially loudly after we won our 19th championship.
Rivalries
Historically, our greatest rivalries have been against Liverpool and Leeds United. Since City was shite for so long, they weren't really considered a major rival even considering they are also in Manchester. Upon getting an influx of oil money, they have started to rise in the ranks so our rivalry with them has also heated up.
Leeds has wallowed under the top flight for several seasons now so our rivalry with them has cooled off in recent time. The two teams did, however, meet during the 2009/10 FA Cup and United was bounced out by their long-time rivals.
If those wankers can manage to get promoted in the upcoming season, you can be sure the Devils will be looking to exact revenge.
Chelsea and Arsenal serve as secondary rivals simply because United is consistently battling for 1st place in the EPL against either one of them. A win, lose, or draw against either team deep in the season could mean silver or heartbreak come May.
Epilogue
The three-headed dragon of CPC, Gene Um, and nolefansam do a great job of running this site and are more than welcome to add, modify, whatever this piece as they see fit.
The same goes for the rest of you guys. Add bits of information or anything else in the comments section.
I would like for this to be a handy guide that new fans can read to attempting the daunting task of supporting a team so rich in history and tradition.
Cheers.

I don't mean this...
To be definitive (at least not in its current form) but I’ve spent over half my work day on this already and I should probably get SOME work done…

I'll add to that, some info on the "leagues" a Manchester United fan will become familiar with.
English Premier League – The premier league is the top flight league in England. It consists of 20 teams, each year at the end of the season the bottom three teams are relegated to the Football League Championship (usually referrred to as just “The Championship”). In addition to the bottom three teams being relegated the top three teams in the Championship win promotion to the EPL. English football is structured so that theoretically a team could enter a team in a beer league and work their way up the ladder to the Premier League.
The structure of English football looks like this.
EPL
Championship
League One
League Two
Conference National
Conference North and Conference South
The FA Cup
The FA Cup is the oldest Football Association competition in the world. All teams in England (and a few Welsh) teams are able to enter the competition at different points. The lower the league the team plays in the earlier they are entered in to the tournement making it much harder for lower league teams to win. The EPL teams are entered in to the 3rd round of the tournement. It’s a very storied tournement where Giant Killing can happen (meaning lower league teams beating higher competition. If a game results in a tie the two sides will play a “replay match” at the other venue. The winner of the FA cup automatically is given entrance to the UEFA Europa League (formerly named the UEFA Cup).
The League Cup/Carling Cup/Worthless Cup/Mickey Mouse Cup
The basics of this Cup remain fairly similar to the FA Cup except that only League teams are invited. EPL.Championship, League 1 and League 2. While some EPL teams still consider this trophy worthy some of the larger clubs will use this tournement to let their youth get a run out against “better than reserves” talent. Probably Manchester United fans least desireable trophy.
UEFA Champions League
I’m just going to cover the very basics of the CL as there are many rules. Champions League football is probably the more interesting side of European Football. The league is open to UEFA leaged teams. Larger leagues (EPL, La Liga, Serie A) are usually slotted 4 teams a piece. So the four top teams from each league are given entrance. “Lesser” leagues are granted less spots from 3 down to 1. The seeding is looked at each year to adjust for gamesmanship and quality of the league. There’s a pretty in depth formula but I’ll spare that. From there each team is given a seed and placed in a group depending on their UEFA coefficient. Teams with similar coefficent are placed together so that they will not meet up in the first round. Each team is drawn in to a group of four, one team from each coefficent. Teams from the same country are not allowed to play each other in this round. After all teams are drawn each team plays the other teams in their group twice, once at home, and once away. The top two teams after the round robin proceed to the next round. The third place teams in each group are invited to the lesser Europa League. Winning your group means that the team will play the second place team of another group, with teams from the same country not allowed to play each other. Win and you’re in to the quarter finals. The draw from the quarter final onward is completely random and teams may now play each other from the same country. Each set of games after the group stage is a home and away set with the winner coming from the aggregate score. If the aggregate is tied the first tie breaker is away goals. For instance if Team A wins at home 2-0 and then loses the away leg 3-1 they are awarded the win because of scoring an away goal. The final is set at a predetermined city that usually is NOT home to one of the teams and is a one off match, if the match is tied after ninety extra time is played (with a mini halftime) if it is still tied the match goes to a penalty shootout with each team getting 5 opportunities. The winner of this competition is granted entrance in to the Club World Championship and also the Super Cup.
Club World Championship
This tournement is similar to the Champions League but brings in teams from each football association ie CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, CAF, UEFA, AFC, and OFC. While it would seem that this would be the crown jewel of club football it really hasnt’ worked out that way, most UEFA teams consider the Champions League trophy to be the pinnacle of success.
Super Cup
The Super Cup pits the winners of the UEFA Champions League vs the winners of the Europa League. It’s been played in Monaco since 1998 but they’ll start rotating cities in 2013.

Very nice
I would say that no matter how shit City is I always hate them with the same level of unbridled passionate hate. As much as I hate Pool and Leeds I also hate City a similar amount. I may be wrong but I think that City, even when a league or two lower, were always a heated rival of ours.

True. My hatred of City...
Reached fever pitch after last season’s FA Cup semi-final.
I can’t wait to run through them in the Community Shield.

Thanks the Munich Disaster was always on my mind.
Never knew what the was. Thanks for the background. Once I figured out what the Champions League I think I was butter. That used to confuse me. Only things I am still trying to figure out now is mainly tactics and who players are from the past. Every time I watch Ryan Giggs, me being a Yankees fan, I think of how watching the Yankees now and not seeing Derek Jeter in his prime was. Literally I missed all Paul Scholes career, most of Giggs, David Beckham, etc. Oh well at it lease it seems at the birth of the next gen with Hernandez, Smalling, Rooney, Nani, Valencia, Young, etc.
Roll Bass and War Ryno for me
If you want t see Giggs in his prime look no further......

Great post, thanks!
I definitely learned a lot with this since I’ve only been watching United for a couple of years. Thanks for the great post!
wonderful post
there is just so much history attached to this club , you couldn’t ever fit it on one post .
on a personal view , reading the above post brings back so many memories when i started to support united .
i was 7 and it was the milk cup final ( league cup now ) 1983 where we lost to liverpool 2-1 in the final . my dad and grandad who were also die hard united fans had to endure many years of questions from me regarding the history of this fine club . i had some great times talking to them over the years and will always love this club because of the relationship it gave me with my dad and grandad.
nothing beats talking football with guys you idolise .
if anyone has any queries or questions they would like answered regarding the greatest club in the world feel free to ask and i will try to help out in any way possible . i have tonnes of books , programes , vidoes ,dvd and i even have a gold record of manchester united’s first five fa cup victories ( they were all the rage in the 80’s ). i also have numerous manchester united related quiz questions if anyone wants to have a little fun
a little example of my quiz questions
who was the last manchester united player to score a goal in the UEFA cup ?
Okay. Let's...
See.
They won the EPL in 93/94 so they would have been in the CL in 94/95. So it can’t be that season. They did not win the league the following season and the effects of the Heysel Disaster were still being felt so 95/96 must have been the last year they were in the UEFA Cup.
Hmmm…

Without looking at the clip
I am thinking back on the “you can’t win anything with kids” double winning season. I know we got knocked out of Europe by a Russian club that I don’t think I have heard of since. Rotor Volgograd or something like that. I know Schmiechel scored in Europe that season. So he is my guess although I am not sure it was our last goal in the UEFA Cup or not.

There should be a whole separate section about 1999. No club will ever have a season as magical as that- even ignoring the fact that they were the first club to win the treble, every major match that season went down in absolutely thrilling fashion.
"Can Manchester United score? They always score... Peter Schmeichel is forward... Beckham, in towards Schmeichel- it's come for Dwight Yorke. Cleared... Giggs with a shot- SHERINGHAM!"
First club
from England to win a domestic league, domestic cup and European Cup treble.
One of the reasons I loved it so much is we stopped Liverpool doing it by beating them in the FA Cup in the early 80s I believe,
