Around SBN: When Dwyane Wade Lost His Cool

Post match reaction thread: Manchester United 3 : 0 Bolton Wanderers

It wasn't particulary exciting, but we got what we needed today. The three points with three goals, one each from the returning maestro, Paul Scholes, Danny Welbeck and Micheal Carrick. A first half penalty was squandered by Wayne Rooney and it looked for all the money in the world the half time scoreline would be 0-0.

Up popped Paul Scholes. The Midfield Magician swept home a square ball from Rooney that calmed any nerves after dominating but not captalizing on chances made in the first half. United were forever getting into good positions, but poor finishing and a lack of composure made sure Bolton hung in there. The second came from Welbeck. A good finish under pressure, the challenge kept him down and that was his last involvement in the game. The fact he limped off suggests it was nothing serious and was more a precaution, so hopefully he is back for Arsenal next week.

The third was a great bit of play from Carrick. Forced onto his left foot, he simply side footed home from a full 20 yards. He really should be pulling the trigger more often with shooting ability like that. He could easily grab upwards of 8 goals a season IMO. For the record that is just his second of the season.

All in all a good day at the office. Some good performances, three goals and a clean sheet. Our defence was rarely troubled, and Anders Lindegaard handled everything thrown his way very well.

We now look toward a trip to Arsenal next weekend in which will be a pivotal match for both teams. United for our title chances and Arsenal in their hopes for a Champions League place.

I went Antonio Valencia

How could you not after that performance?

I wasn’t able to see the game because Fox Soccer or ESPN 2 didn’t televise the game, but I was following the match on manutd.com and it seems by reading the text of the game concours with what Sweet Science wrote in the recap: that for the majority of the first half, United was snakebitten when it came to finishing and the Bolton GK made some timely saves to keep the Trotters in the game. Not to mention Wazza flubbed a PK. But towards the end of the first half and on things started to go our way with a goal from Scholesy in stoppage time and two other goals in the 2nd half by Danny Welbeck and Michael Carrick.

It probally should of been more than 3-0, more like 5 or 6-0 but regardless we got the three points and scored more than one goal. Chalk it up as is and get ready for United/Arsenal at the Emirates because it’s going to be a cracker of a game.

Solid effort...

We certainly didn’t play our best….seemed to be lacking a during edge for much of the game, funny thing to say when you win 3-0, but still true. Valencia was untouchable, and the Ginger few into the game. I was disappointed in Nani’s play….very wasteful with the ball. He seems distracted. I was happy with rafael putting in 90 minutes, and with his performance. Very useful in attack, and only out of position defensively a couple times.

good shout regarding Rafael

Considered putting him in the poll, but he just missed out

Easily Valencia

Nani was completely lacking today but it didn’t matter because Valencia on the wing was a consistent attacking threat

Europa

I have to wonder; when those matches start up the squad is going to be even more taxed. I wonder If a treble with Europa, FA, EPL would be something Sir Alex would go after. Or would he simply play Diouf, Keane, Pogba etc to give them top flight pitch time

welcome to TBB

I hope he integarates the youth into the Europa scene, along with a little expereince. Depends on the state of the squad regarding injuries. If we are in the position we are in now, I would suggest chuck the lot in.

What are your thoughts on Morrison?

by Sweet science on Jan 14, 2012 8:27 PM GMT up reply actions

Thanks

I;ve read a bunch about Morrison but haven’t seen much of him. Based on what I’ve read and the limited Youtube highlights I would like to see him get more pitch time. Perhaps partner him with Scholes and Carrick in different matches to get a feel for the first team. It may also help ground him a bit. But I think he also needs to get time with the first team attack, guys who are going to get on the end of the types of passing he is capable of.
But that worries me about the development of Pogba, also an exciting talent. Would you play the two together?
I would hate to lose either or both coming this summer. The need for quality Mid field play is so important if United want to challenge Barcelona in the future.
Perhaps DiMaria is in Sir Alex’s plans if he is set to let either of these youg guns go.

by Fire_edsalandturgeon on Jan 14, 2012 9:48 PM GMT reply actions

What makes you think of Di Maria?

Agree about the midfield. At a club like ours we need to compare ourselves against the best. Barca are the best so we need to be matching them. Now we can’t do that buy buying stupid money like City, so I agree we need to hang on to our most promising youngsters. Ravel & Pogba fit into that catogory

But Ravels head seems to have outweighed his considerable talent, so in a way, I am kind of indifferent to him staying or going. He seems a bit of a twat tbh.

I actually think that both of these young kids might be too big for their egos

I think that is a fundamental difference between the Scholes, Giggs, Beckham class that is the benchmark. I think these kids are told how unbelievable they are from the time they start playing. Their managers are fighting for every pound of value to sell them. And I think that this derisive mentality makes it harder to integrate these kids next to established stars like Rooney or even Nani. Rooney is one of the most popular and famous players in the world, Chicharito is a phenomenon in Mexico, Evra and Ferdinand are National team captains, and they have this kid who comes in and pisses it away. Thats got to annoy some on the team aside for Ferguson.
Personality and how that personality fits into a squad is a big deal for team cohesion. Im pretty sure CR7’s last year fell apart bc of all the transfer talk dogging every trip to the mainland and abroad. Not to mention his own attitude inside the club because he knew he was moving to RM. So I agree that having these kids act like asses is bad for the the team and team success.
But they do need first team experience. I think Pogba and his long shot making ability can be molded into a Scholes type midfielder, deadly from distance, technically gifted, and as he gets older to become a more physical and imposing force in the center of the pitch.

Good stuff

I enjoy reading your posts man

by Sweet science on Jan 15, 2012 8:16 PM GMT up reply actions

Please Sir Alex

Use the Europa League to see what Morrison and Pogba can do….at the very least, management AND fans can see them in game against good talent and we can see what these kids have. I’ve got higher hopes for Pogba than Ravel, but that’s just me. Who cares about a secondary European trophy, lets see the kids!

Our friendly neighborhood Liverpool fan, Bromantic, just brought to my attention that Scholes is now halfway to Andy Carroll’s goal total in the PL this year.

I figured I would share the feeling amusement with my fellow Reds.

He'l come good

When you get into Europe and he is firing he will cause lots of teams problems with his physical presence

by Sweet science on Jan 16, 2012 4:48 PM GMT up reply actions

That's the problem with having to wait on a striker to come good.

His in ability to do anything may very well cost us 4th. Then the downward spiral begins as it becomes harder and harder to attract top talent without CL football. I don’t want to be a doomsdayer, but it’ll take a lot of Viagra to cure his impotency.
