Post Match Reaction: Arsenal 1 - 2 Manchester United. Welbeck Scores the winner

Oh Danny Boy.............(Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images)

Well, it got a little tense in the second half, but we got the three points and played quite well I thought. Danny Welbeck clinched the three points late in the second half after Robin Van Persie's equaliser. Antonio Valencia put us ahead as half time approached after he powerfully headed home a quite fantastic Ryan Giggs cross.

I think we were good value for our win. Thomas Vermaelen made a return to the Arsenal backline and early on he did a good job on the in form Valencia. However Nani on the left constantly ripped Arsenal apart and Djourou was awful. Nani really had the beating of him all day long and Wenger had to throw on novice Nicholas Yennaris.

At times we rode our luck too. Van Persie had a fantastic chance to equalise early in the second half, but with the goal gaping, he fizzed his shot wide from about 12 yards.

The winner came from the right boot of Danny Welbeck. Valencia made a fantastic run, played a one two with Ji-Sung-Park, and the ball fell to the young England striker who slotted away.

A special mention to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain of Arsenal. The youngster made his first start in the Premier League, and only his third appearance. He was a threat all day and made a quite wonderful assist for Van Persie's goal. The first touch in particular was sublime.

A couple pieces of bad news came today. First, Phil Jones went off early with an injury that probably looked worse than it was. Early indications suggest he twisted his ankle, but I guess he will be extremely doubtful for next week.

The other came from the blue half of Manchester. With the game at 2-2, Jermaine Defoe had a wonderful chance to win it in injury time for Spurs. Man City went up the other end and sub Mario Balotelli was upended by Ledley King in the box. Super Mario then slotted the penalty with ease. That was effectivley a three point swing in CIty's favour right there, and ended a quite brilliant second half.

Manchester United sit three points behind CIty. Please share any thoughts you have on today's game.

I went Antonio

A goal and an assist. He is in some vein of form right now. Long may it continue

And to think I suggested the notion of selling him a couple of months ago (Even the best get it wrong#)

Nani beat up on Djourou like Ivan Drago in Apollo Creed.

Welbeck looked great today also, as he has done all season.

Arsene Wenger made a lot of Arsenal fans unhappy by subbing Arshavin for Oxlade-Chamberlain, and he’ll have some questions to answer for it.

"Can Manchester United score? They always score... Peter Schmeichel is forward... Beckham, in towards Schmeichel- it's come for Dwight Yorke. Cleared... Giggs with a shot- SHERINGHAM!"

I didn't think Welbeck was great

He took his goal well but he should have had more and put the game to rest earlier.

AA for Chamberlain was baffiling. Not sure if booing at full time was deserved, but they do have a legit gripe about that sub.

Personally, I think that sub mistake was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. The frustration between Arsenal fans and Wenger started eons before the clash at the Emirates.

I think Alan Smith summed it up pretty well if you asked me

+1

Wenger deserves respect for his past acheivments but he is just not cutting the mustard.

I fear for Arsenal if Wenger is still their manager by the start of next season

I picked Valencia

Anyone else notice how much Evra’s form has improved since Suarez received his punishment?

I suggest finding some highlights of the CIty game

Some great goals and a wonderful second half. I walked in the pub and it was 0-0, 10 minutes later and it was 2-2. a superb passage of play

Am I the only one who didn't love Welbeck today

I thought he was a tad too wasteful. There was a few times where he should have been scoring IMO

I think I see your point...

He was tremendous in his all-around game… but somewhat wasteful. Even Fergie said Welbeck could’ve had numerous goals today. I actually think today’s match sums up where Welbeck’s game is at right now.

I like him starting matches because of his all-around game and I like the idea of bringing on Chicharito if a goal is needed in the last 20-30 minutes of a match.

Yeah

He is deceptivley good at holding up the ball. He has grown so much in that aspect of his game. Just needs to find a killer instict in front of goal and he will be the full package.

He is still my first choice striker.

Be interesting if Fergie gives Hernandez a game next week?

Here's my XI vs Liverpool...

Rafael, Smalling, Evans, Evra; Valencia, Carrick (if fit), Modric :), Nani (Park if Nani is not fit); Rooney, Welbeck

I thought he played a good game

Agreed. He had a good game

I just didn’t love him the way others have

He was very wasteful with his chances IMO. A big failing for a striker.

He lacks the assasin like clinicality of a Chica at this stage in his career. His allround game makes up for that, but he needs to improve on that aspect of his game to take himelf to “the next level”

Before I say anything

I voted for Valencia for MOTM. Simply because he contributed to both United goals (the sweet header he scored and him making an important pass to Danny Welbeck who scored the GWG)

I thought United played a good game. They were aggressive and trying to make things happen on the pitch. The only gripe I had the team was although the defence was tight, they did Arsenal more chances that I liked and you just can’t do that when RvP is on the pitch, all he needs is one shot and he can burn a opposing team. Plus there were a lot of chances Arsenal had where they shot and missed (like the one where we turnover the ball when Chris Smalling blew a tire)

Although I will credit Van Persie on celebrating his grandfather b-day by wishing him with a message on his undershirt. Pretty classy if you ask me, unlike what Balotelli but hey why always me right?

Even if it was a tight scoring game, it was entertaining game that went down the wire. Hopefully well keep our fine form going when we face Liverpool at Anfield in the FA Cup. Should be a good one.
