POST MATCH REACTION THREAD: Liverpool 2:1 Manchester United

De Gea waving the ball passed him (Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images)

Just bitter disappointment. Really angry. Not a happy bunny. First off, congratulations to Liverpool. They won the game, they took their chances. They put the pressure on De Gea.

David De Gea..... Looked like Bambi in headlights whenever a ball was lofted towards him. Especially when the area was crowded. (Corners for instance, free kicks too). Not a great trait for a keeper. I have been a defender of him as well. I still believe he can be a top keeper, but he now needs to really do some hard graft. He becomes nervous when he has to put his body on the line. Anders Lindegaard is certainly our number one form here on out in the League.

Valencia hit the post early on with a fantastic effort. He and Rafael had agreat first half down the right. The winger quietened a little in the second however.

Liverpool's first goal came from a corner halfway through the first half. Liverpool had the nous to station three players amongst the young Spanish keeper, and Agger headed the ball beyond the floundering keeper as he pushed Andy Carroll away from him. The Danes header was a free one, so the blame cannot be asserted 100% to the keeper. Just a lot of it.

From there on our midfield dominated for a large portion of the match. Giggs, Carrick and Scholes was linking up very well and the tenacious Park worked as hard as ever. It was the South Korean who scored the equaliser. Rafael battled well down the right hand side and his cross at the byline was perfect for the late arriving Park, who finished well.

Into the second half and we still were monopolising possession. Liverpool weren't hurting us. Then Scholes went off and the game changed. Bellamy came on for Liverpool as well as Adam. The tables had turned. They bossed the game.

And sure enough, the goal came for the 'Pool. A Reina goal kick was flicked on by the largely in-effective Carroll, Evra failed to cut it out and Kuyt ran in behind him to power home the winner.

Game over!

I think we played well for a large portion of the match. But we just didn't do enough. I hate to criticize the gaffer, but..... It is a cup tie against Liverpool, at Anfield. Did he have to play De Gea? As soon as I saw his name I got real worried.

And taking Scholes off. We lost our edge in midfield. We were really playing well with the extra man and that vanished and we were punished.

Still, hindsight is a wonderful thing....

Vent any feelings you have here. Better here than taking it out on your loved ones... Avoid the criminal charges I guess :) We will see Liverpool (With Suarez no less) At Anfield next month. Lets stick it to them!

Rafael was awesome today..

I think we should get off the De Gea bandwagon. .He was poor but not that poor imo..

He was poor but not that poor imo..

I don’t know what to say to that. Apart from to say I don’t agree. I think that was one of his worse performances IMO

He done nothing that, probably Ben Amos could have done…..

by Sweet science on Jan 28, 2012 3:17 PM GMT up reply actions

Agree on Rafael though

My M.O.T.M.

He was fantastic. Layed everything on the line. Brilliant IMO

by Sweet science on Jan 28, 2012 3:18 PM GMT up reply actions

I agree. I don't think he was that much at fault for the first goal.

The marking was poor, and the second goal was all evra’s fault for falling asleep. You’re asking a lot of you keeper to stop the kind of shot kuyt had given the time and space he had,

I agree

Kuyt’s shot wasn’t the problem, it was the rest….

He flapped at too many simple crosses. He was shocking

MOTM

Can it be anyone but Scholes? Benefit of hindsight shows that him being replaced lost the game for us.

by Amen Amachigh on Jan 28, 2012 3:18 PM GMT reply actions

Not sure hindsight should have to be mentioned lol

I’m sure I wasn’t the only one watching the game who cringed when that substitution was made. It was obvious Scholes was the reason we were controlling the game.

I thought Carrick helped him much...

Rafael was immense throughout though.. Bailed us out many times..

really?

I’d be intersted to see his stats?

Not necessarily turning the ball over directly to Liverpool

Although that happened a few times where he got caught looking around and the ball was stolen. More so the long balls that miss the target…he was spot on with the long ball against Arsenal. Today I thought it was a bit off and seemed more like a hit and hope instead of picking out a man like he did against arsenal.

We don't need no meow; we don't need no cats!

by mpeters10 on Jan 28, 2012 3:32 PM GMT up reply actions

Thing is, with the long ball

You have Welbeck and rooney up top against Arsenal. Today you had the two CB’s and Carragher

And if you want to play the long ball out wide, Nani was dominating Djourou. And Enrique and Maxi was alot tighter to Valencia, like wise with Kelly and Downing on Park (Who was drifting inside as well)

by Sweet science on Jan 28, 2012 3:37 PM GMT up reply actions

Scholes was more patient in picking apart and manipulating the defense which created the space for Valencia.

He passed it around very patiently in the middle, drawing in LFC players and then spraying it out wide. It was brilliant, he looked like Xavi today. That’s exactly what Xavi does for Barcelona. What frustrated me about carrick today was that when others were being patient and passing it around waiting for the right time to put in the killer pass, he seemed to panic at times. For example when he inexplicably, despite not being under too much pressure, and everyone else remaining calm, he flops the ball in the air back to smalling who had to rush to keep the LFC player from taking the ball.

welbeck sucks as a lone striker

ugh…he should have slot the ball to evra, when evra makes the overlapping run

by khengzzz on Jan 28, 2012 3:36 PM GMT reply actions

He didn't have the best of games

However that is the first time I can remember he has been deployed as a lone striker. Of all the strikers we possess, he probably has the tools to fair best as a lone striker

It really is a difficult position to play

by Sweet science on Jan 28, 2012 3:39 PM GMT up reply actions

Welbeck seems to make a decent partnership with Rooney.

But Rooney was out today so he shouldn’t have been out there on his own. He needs someone with him,

We don't need no meow; we don't need no cats!

by mpeters10 on Jan 28, 2012 3:40 PM GMT up reply actions

But then

You have to play 4-4-2

And when we switched to that we got throughly out played

So that means you either drop Welbeck alltogether, or play Chica (Not a lone striker at all) or Berba. Maybe Berba could have held the ball up. He has many faults does Dimitar (And I regulary sing them) but he can hold the ball up when he gets his foot on the ball

by Sweet science on Jan 28, 2012 3:43 PM GMT up reply actions

agreed

i think man utd palyed better with a 3 midfield formation rather than 4-4-2 ever since tom cleverly injured

by khengzzz on Jan 28, 2012 3:46 PM GMT up reply actions

Plenty of class with Carrick Scholes and Giggs

But mobility is not a strong suit

You need mobility in a 4-4-2, IMO (Carrick n Giggs V Chelsea last year being an exception)

by Sweet science on Jan 28, 2012 3:48 PM GMT up reply actions

He gets a lot of scoring chances every game he plays in

But he’s not as clinical as Hernandez….for example last game against arsenal when Rooney sent him clear through and he fell on his face one on one when he needed to just shoot. He has one heck of a shot when he gets it right and he has great pace. But Hernandez has better finishing ability, he’s better at positioning and his off the ball movement is more intelligent than Danny’s.

We don't need no meow; we don't need no cats!

by mpeters10 on Jan 28, 2012 3:54 PM GMT reply actions

But the problem with Hernandez is that you have to lay it on a plate for him

Sure, once you have done that it is pretty much inevitable that he will score. But he doesn’t link the play well. Has no creativity in his play. And his first touch is not great. He also gets pushed off the ball very easily

Agree completley on Welbeck though.* If he had Hernandez’s assasin like ability in front of goal, you would have one hell of a striker….

From a Liverpool Fan's perspective

It had to be Scholes. The game changed when he was taken off and it allowed Liverpool the ability to get a foot in the midfield for once during the game.

Before that, Scholes had completely dominated and his distribution was typically excellent. It is is a bit unnerving for me that Liverpool couldn’t dominate the All-Geriatric squad put out by Fergie in midfield.

I still think if we went for a three man midfield throughout the game, we still would have had the majority of possesion. Wether it be Carrick we took off, or Giggs, I think the tactical switch was more costly than the actual personal change.

It would have been handy if we had the legs of Anderson to bring on

by Sweet science on Jan 28, 2012 4:24 PM GMT up reply actions

I think the accuracy of Scholes' passing was partly what allowed for his domination

As soon as he got it, his head was up and he made a smart pass that really made Liverpool retreat and kept them pinned for long spells. Could anyone else do that? I don’t know since I don’t get to watch as much footy as I used to, so I am asking the question.
Liverpool did well to keep most of the possession outside the box once United applied the pressure. There really was very little through play into the box for United. Your only goal came on a flukey touch off Enrique (although he should have just gotten rid of it) and it was on a counter.

Oh, and sorry they treated you poorly over there. For what it is worth, I commented on it in the game thread. I was watching on DVR delay though. I think people were just a little too strung out, like I get pacing in front of the TV when we play you guys.

No Worries man

I think the worse sub of the three CM’s was Scholes. And your right, no one in the Premier League has his ability to dictate the game with his array of passing.

But if we brought on a CM… Even a Pogba (Despite his lack of experience) I feel we still would have had a far better foothold in the game than with a two man midfield. Hell you could even have stuck Park in the middle and Welbeck outwide….

Just a poor tactical change

by Sweet science on Jan 28, 2012 4:44 PM GMT up reply actions

I see what you are saying.

You are probably right. It would have been even easier on whoever came in since Gerrard was off too.

Sorry about sticking you with this reaction thread.

When I said I would do it I had forgotten my daughter had basketball at 930. Our game ended at 940 so I was late as it was.

I looked at the thread on Anfield Asylum where you were “trolling”. They don’t appreciate our kind very much. I figured you were joking but knew without a doubt that they would react that way. Bromantic is far and away the most level headed poster there and that’s hard to believe since I’ve been at the pub with him for games.

I have told you before about the BB :)

No worries. I enjoy doing it so it was no burden man. I feel I needed to vent some anger into words. Helps me think a little

As for the AA….. I do understand it was a highly charged game so passions were running high, however if one of “their kind” had come over too our thread, I would like to think we would be a little welcoming. It wasn’t as though I was taunting them just after we had scored either, otherwise I would fully understand their reaction

Bromantic really is a credit to their site and it is a pleasure too talk football with him, and a little banter never goes amiss either :)

It was a tough result to swallow

But regardless of the result, I thought United played a good game. Yeah De Gea could of done better on the first goal but I thought we possessed the ball well and we able to pass smoothly and was real impressed by the hard work of Rafael to create the play that led to our only goal and the way Ji Sung Park finished it, but what did them in was the fact they were sloppy in the last 10-15 minutes of the game. They let LFC control the ball towards the end and gave them too much room in the process and as a result Dirk Kuyt burned us, simple as that.

I already got over the loss and am now focusing my attention on two things: The match coming up against Stoke City and writing a blog post for this site on why i’m a United fan. But if there was anything that grinded my gears about this FA Cup loss was whom we played and how it was won. I hate the fact that we lost to one of our most fierce rivals (next to City) and the fact that we were a few minutes away from forcing a replay at Old Trafford and blew it on the end because the team played sloppy towards the end and Patrice Evra defended poorly on the play, that’s why left me with a real bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. But regardless of the result, I’m proud of my team. They played well, gave it all for the club and supporters and put it all on the line, they just came up short in the end, it happens.

But I put it all behind me because I have to time to dwell on it. The Stoke match is less that 72 hours away and as soon as you know it, the Europa League will be starting for us. Too many matches to think of to keep dwelling on this one match.

"Really wanted The FA Cup this year though. It’s been a while"

Eight seasons to be exact, we last won the title in 03-04 beating Millwall 3-0 (two goals by Ruud van Nistelrooy and one by Christiano Rolaldo). I feel the same way you do, I wanted to win that title badly I could taste the silverware. After the CL, this is the next important title in England.

When we beat City at the Ethihad I thought we had a real chance of going all the way, I really did. Then this happened. Guess there’s always next year. Hopefully when that day comes United will be more prepared (and healthy although injuries didn’t lose this game) and ready than they were todat at Anfield.

For me the League & the CL are pretty much equal at seasons start.FA Cup just a little behind in my book

I said before the match that I felt the winner of this tie will win the competition. Usually I would now hope that our conquerors will go on and win it…. However as it was Liverpool that beat us……

No way

The Carling Cup is the top competition in England. At least that is what I tell myself to make being in that final feel a little better and less like a wasted cause.

Oh yeah without a doubt

My feelings toward winning the FA Cup is because we havn’t won it in so long. And it really is a special cometition.

by Sweet science on Jan 29, 2012 1:56 PM GMT up reply actions

And it really is a special cometition.

It is a special competition. It’s the tourney where most of the teams in England compete for. This is the tourney where magic and giant killing happens. Not to mention you win the FA Cup, your the team of England IMHO.

This is more special than the Carling Cup because in the Carling Cup only the teams of the FL compete in and most important: most of the teams top starts do not compete in it (atleast the big money teams like United, Arsenal, Chelsea etc). Personally I disagree with all this because every competition a football team competes in is special, but alot of people take a different opinion than mine on this topic.

I do have a little sof spot for the Carling cup too

But that is mainly due to my beloved Aldershot’s succsess this season :)

And it really is a useful competition for United. Gives youth an essential chance

by Sweet science on Jan 30, 2012 1:18 PM GMT up reply actions

I agree

I like the Carling Cup because you don’t see the stars compete, that you see the reserves and starlets compete. I mean it’s because of this tourney that I got to see guys who wouldn’t be on the first team like Michael Owen, Will Keane and Paul Pogba play.

Plus science I have always believed in never being picky when it comes to silverware. I always believed that if you have a chance to win a piece of silverware like winning the league, CL, League Cup, FA Cup, Community Shield, UEFA Club Cup, UEFA Cup etc. go for it because all the competitions are special in their own way and every time you win silverware your being pride to your club. Plus you don’t know when the next time your going to get a chance to win it again, so don’t squander the opportunity given to you.

I don’t know if you believe that and I know alot of United supporters don’t, but I do. To me winning any type of trophy is important in its own way.

Same too...

We beat City and then equalized against Liverpool.. And then we dominated for a while after that..

I thought we can really go all the way once we get that second goal.. But it’s not to be.. T_T
