PLAYER RATINGS: Manchester United V Stoke City

We applaud you Paul! (Photo by Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images)

Here are the ratings for last nights game against Stoke City. Let's get to it!

A score of 1 being the lowest (Sebastian Savic standard), 10 being the highest (Messi like) A score of 6 will be standard, 7 is solid, a very good game will get an 8, 9 is good for outstanding and 10 is unplayable. 10's will be very rare. Not only will they have to play the game of their life, but it will usually come against a team of good quality or in a big match (FInals, championship deciding game's etc.)

Ben Amos - Didn't have a lot to do. Claimed a few crosses well and got down smartly to stop a header in the second half. Dealt with everything rather comfortably, but as there was a lack of action, I can't rate him too high. 6.5/10

Chris Smalling - Defended solidly. Not a great player to have at right back though when the opposition is pinned back on row Z though. He is quite uncertain on the ball at times and lacks crossing ability. I would rather have a Jones or a Rafael, who are much more ambitious when going forward. Still. He was solid. Didn't let the team down. 6.5/10

Rio Ferdinand - Looked assured in his latest comeback. Covered well. His positional play is a joy to behold. He has a knack of seeing things before they happen. Didn't really give Crouch and Jones a sniff of a mistake to capitalise on. Distributed the ball well, as has become the norm. 7/10

Jonny Evans - At the risk of repeating myself, just a good solid performance. Maybe didn't win as many aerial battles as he would have liked, but when up against that beanpole, who could blame him! Got forward with the ball well and assisted the midfielders in giving us a man extra when is possession. 6.5/10

Patrice Evra - Added some much needed width down the left as Park was forever drifting inwards. Delivery was far from great. Ermmm... Thats all I have on him. Distinctly average! 6/10

Star-divide

Antonio Valencia - In the form of his life. Nothing flashy about his wing play, but still very hard to stop him. His agility and balance is great, and allows him to change direction when dribbling sharply. Once he has a yard his delivery is very good. Won the penalty and he done well to cut across his man, who was always going to bring him down. 7.5/10

Micheal Carrick - Him and Paul Scholes both played over 100 passes. Combine their total's and Stoke's whole pass count couldn't match their exploits. Just dominated the game with his midfield partner. Should have scored, but the fact he got himself into the goalscoring position was pleasing. He has done that a lot more recently, and his performances are all the better for it. 8/10

Paul Scholes - How does he do it? The way he can dictate the game is incredible. You would never have known he has been away from the first team for 6 months would you. Showing the untrained observer why Zidane thought he was the best midfield player in the world back in the day. Went narrowly wide with a half volley that the whole of Old Traffod would have been willing in. 8.5/10

Ji Sung Park - Another industrious performance. His runs are so hard to track, and he has a way of making space for himself to receive the ball. If only he had a little more technical ability on the ball..... Won the first penalty to cap another good performance, following his goal at the weekend. 7.5/10

Chicharito - He battled well, and I remember him linking up quite beautifully with Valencia on the right in the second half. But his game is all about goals. Got one with the peno and he will look to kick on now when given a chance. Subbed for Pogba 6.5/10

Dimitar Berbatov - Played well, better than his strike partner. Was a lot more industrious than his last start (Newcastle) where he was quite shocking in my opinion. Held the ball up well and his silky touches were to be admired. Slotted home the second Peno well. 7/10

Subs

Paul Pogba - Probably the most intriguing performance of the night. The young powerhouse took hold of the game and displayed his strong running along with his technical ability. Played some teasing balls into the box as well. More of the same please! 7/10

Annnnnd......

Darren Gibson - 10/10! Had to be done.....

As always please share your thoughts. Who played well? Who sucked? Thoughts on Pogba's brilliant cameo?

I can't disagree with these ratings much

Perhaps though, I’d bump Evans up a bit for stepping out of the back so well. He did well to ignite attacking in the space just right of central while Scholes/Carrick did this more from the space just left of central. His positioning throughout the match was very good.

I was torn a little by Evans

And as well as he done defensivley & attackingly, he got bullied in the air ever so slightly. It was a good job Sunderland played so deep because if that had happened in our box, we could have had problems.

Also, I didn’t want to reward the defense too much because of the clean sheet because Stoke posed little to no problem.

But yeah, I can see the reasoning behind a 7, or 7.5 at a stretch

Scholesy

What a treat these past few weeks have been watching a vintage Paul Scholes. I’m just trying to enjoy it while it lasts.

Absolute masterclass performances.

I really can see him going beyond the end of the season

He spoke recently of not realising how much he missed playing. I really think he will go on beyond and into next season. Hell, him Giggs and Fergie might all retire together

by Sweet science on Feb 2, 2012 12:04 PM GMT up reply actions

I know this could still be a long way away but...

When that inevitable day does indeed come when Fergie retires, who do you guys have at the top of your wish list to replace him? Mourinho? Pep?

Mourinho or Martin O'Neil for me

He said he’s got another three seasons in him

by Sweet science on Feb 2, 2012 3:59 PM GMT up reply actions

1. Talking Fergie out of retirement 2. Not taking ‘No’ for an answer when Fergie says ‘No’ 3. Mourinho 4. Jurgen Klopp 5. Begging Fergie one last time to come back.

Why no Pep for you two?

Obviously nobody is too sure what he has to offer when he doesn’t have the world beaters, Barcelona, at his disposal, but I feel as if he might be a suitable replacement. I would prefer Mourinho to him anyday. I hadn’t even thought about Klopp but now that you mention him I think I would be okay with him as Fergie’s replacement too. I really like what he has done with Dortmund.

Sure, he has had great succsess in his one job

But I could manage that team (i can’t but im trying to make a point) That team has all the talent in the world. He also is a Barca legend, so he understands how the club works. And has no PL experience

Mourinho is the easy choice for me

I like Mourinho because I think he’s the one with the confidence and ego big enough not to feel too daunted by succeeding the greatest manager in the history of football. He’s also proven that he can win with different personnel and in any competition. It doesn’t take him long to do this. Even if he was only at Old Trafford for just a few seasons, that may not be a bad thing… he might be the perfect transition man for a hopefully long-term solution. I do realize though many United fans are not fond of Mourinho.

I actually think Guardiola is very underrated as a tactician. He obviously embodies everything ideal about Barcelona but he’s also gone out of his way to learn more from other tacticians he really respects… most notably Marcelo Bielsa. The high-pressing ways of Barca has a Bielsa influence to it. But because Guardiola’s identity is so tied down to Barca, that just makes me feel uneasy about having him at United. Plus, one could reasonably wonder if it would take him a few seasons to find the right personnel for his specific brand of football.

Just my opinion.

the Mourinho to England rumblings...

I almost wonder if he succeed Fabio Capello and manage England through the 2014 World Cup. That time frame would still allow Fergie to manage for an additional 2.5 seasons from and then allow Mourinho to succeed him. The timing would be perfect and I think England needs a practical tactician.

* I almost wonder if he SHOULD succeed Fabio....

my typos are getting worse….

If it indeed is true that Mourinho badly wants a return to England, his club options are limited as there is no way he’s not managing a Champions League club or one that has no realistic hope of qualifying for it. So, for next season, the only possible openings would be Chelsea (if AVB doesn’t finish 4th), Arsenal (if Wenger were to leave somehow), Spurs (if ’Arry takes the England job), City (if Mancini wins nothing this year), or Liverpool (when Dalglish moves on).

I don’t know if the two North London clubs would spend enough money in acquiring players in order to please Mourinho while I think Mancini has made enough progress at City not to be sacked after this season — even if City don’t win the title.

I see many aren't that sold on David Moyes

I’m willing to take the risk with Moyes though.. Really good manager.. Needs a bigger stage!!

by dingmajiao on Feb 4, 2012 5:55 AM GMT up reply actions

Great manager

But has no Champions league experience. Only took Everton as far as 4th one season (A great achievement with little resources), I just think he needs to prove himself at a bigger team. Maybe if Redknapp takes the England job he can go to Spurs to see what he can do

Amos

I was impressed with how decisive he was on crosses… his decision-making was instantaneous.

Also, his distribution was good as well and he showed confidence with both feet. Quite impressive for an English goalkeeper.

Joe Hart

Could you imagine how much more complete he would be if he didn’t have the touch and passing range of Andy Carroll?

If I could pick any Premier League goalkeeper right now for the run-in, I’d pick Michel Vorm.

'Good ball retention starts from the goalkeeper'

I posted this before as a ‘FanShot’ … but if anyone is curious and missed it then, here’s some interesting analysis on goalkeeper distribution.

I'd much rather have Joe Hart than De Gea as of this moment

His Keeping (Saving, decisions, Command of his box) is the best in the league

For me, A keeper with good feet is an added bonus. It is very useful, but make sure you get a solid keeper first & foremost
