POST MATCH REACTION: Manchester United 2 - 1 Liverpool
Right, I am going to get this out of the way first. Suarez didn't shake Patrice Evra's hand. It was a dumb move by the Liverpool striker.
Lets move on
A tentative first half which almost dragged was followed by a quite brilliant start to the second. For the second game in a row, Rooney took the game by the scruff of the neck and slotted home twice within the first five minutes of the restart. A corner that was flicked on by Liverpool's Jordan Henderson was volleyed home with force by Wayne Rooney. Wazza then captilized on Valencia's pass, after the Equadorian had dispossesed Jay Spearing in their own half.
That man Luis Suarez grabbed a late consolation for the scowsers, captilizing on a failed header from Jonny Evans, after the ball had bounced off of Rio Ferdinand. David De Gea made a good late stop from a good strike from Glen Johnson, who was possibly Liverpool's most consistant threat during the game.
At the final whistle, I loved how Patrice lapped up the warmth from the Old Traffod crowd. Shame he has been usless for the last two weeks. One hopes now that he won't play Liverpool again this season, his form improves. Fergie shows no sign of dropping him.
The first half was littered with mistakes. Micheal Carrick and Paul Scholes, at the heart of the Manchester united engine room, gave the ball away far too many times. And Ryan Giggs didn't have his best of afternoons. Antonio Valencia was giving one of the leagues better left backs all kinds of hell though. And the link up play between Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck was a joy to behold. Although the latter's play in the opposition box let him down just a little. Too many times he wasted possesion in good positions, although I can't be too displeased with the youngster. His build up play, his holding up of the ball, and first touch were all a class act. Just needs to wise up a little more in front of goal.
Rooney was the man though. When nerves might have began to set in, he was clinical. He took his two goals very well, and should have had a third, but skewd his shot wide.
The defense were solid for the most parts, but still at times they lapse in concentration. The goal for instance. Jonny Evans, who was sublime in my opinion throughout, went up for a header from a Charlie Adam free kick, leaving the ball to bounce off of Rio and into the path of Suarez (that nice bloke Luis). We have a habit of shooting ourselves in the foot and we need to cut that out if we want the title. We really were cruising at 2-0 and should have had more, but at 2-1, a mistake then could have cost ud dearly.
All in all, a good day at the office. Rooney came to the party once again and claimed the three points for us. The moment of the day was probably Rafael climbing above Andy Carroll to win a header. Wow.
And finally, on Luis Suarez. He really is a tool. He was acting as though he was the victim all game. And also, didn't Evra claim that he did not think Suarez was a racist? Our man tried doing him a favour! Unbelievably stupid, and we are lucky the situation didn't esculate beyond all proportion.

Got to agree
Great finish on the first goal and a wonderful attack for the second goal. Second would be Valencia. The man was all over the pitch making good passes, making things happen and most importantly forced a turnover that led to Rooney’s second goal.

Oh God
Why is everyone making Evra out to be the victim? Let’s get on with it.
Suarez has the right to not shake his hand.
You guys will surely take offense but really let the whole thing go. Suarez did nothing to provoke Evra today.
We had a shitty display today. Congrats on the win. LFC have bigger problems than a snubbed handshake!

You certainly do!
And to be honest, I don’t think he did have the right not to shake his hand. It is a rule that the players shake hands before games. If anything, Evra should have been the one not shaking his hand!

And this one wasn't cancelled
Even so, What has Evra done to Suarez? He even said he didn’t believe Suarez was a racist. That was a complete lack of respect.

I only pointed out the cancelled one to show that this is merely tradition
not by any means a hard fast rule.
I don’t like how Macca and Darke were proposing scrapping the hand shake though either. It is a tradition that should stay. No reason to scrap it because of this crap.

MOTM, its Rooney imo. So clinical in front of goal right now, he effectively ended the game in ten minutes. My other two guys were Valencia and Rafael. Valencia rebounded nicely from his mediocre showing against Chelski, great to see. And Rafael plays the game the way I want a defender on my team to play. United captured my heart as a kid
so they’re my team. But I was a ball-boy for the Sounders (A-League at that time) as a kid and I regularly attend their matches now so I’m definitely a huge supporter.
It was amazing when United was here. I got a chance that week to hold the Premier League trophy, meet Bryan Robson and Paddy Crerand, attend a closed-off training session, and see my favorite player (Park Ji-sung) score in person. It was all incredible for me.

Wow not that's a moment you'll treasure forever
Not only did you get to see your team play in person, but got to hoise the PL trophy and meet various United players (partically Captain Marvel).
I know one thing, if United does a pre season tour in the states again and they come to a MLS city near me (the Crew would never have the funds to bring United in) i’m going because it’s one thing to watch them on TV, but seeing them in person if a expierence you’ll never forget.
You and me are basically the same when it comes to the teams we root for. Like you I have been following United for as long as I can remember. Watching players like Beckham, Cole, Scholes, Ronaldo to name a few made me a supporter for life.
I have only been a Crew supporter since 2009 but i’m a diehard. Despite the fact that C-Bus is 3 1/2 hours from my home i’ve been a full STH since 2010 and i’ve been to various road games (including your hometown of Seattle and this summer Portland)

We probally were. The game I went to in Seattle was in 2010. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. The Sounders struck first, but my man Steven Lenhart leveled the game right before halftime. It was a great game but the weather was lousy with it being cold and rainy and 51 degrees.
I’ll be back in Seattle when I go on vacation to Portland this summer, i’ll be taking the train up to see the city.
I remember the Open Cup final game, the Sounders won 2-1 and I was shocked the only Crew goal came from Kevin fucking Burns. Thought we were going to win it but it wasn’t meant to be. I’m glad the rules were changed to make every MLS team eligible for the tourney. Plus I like that they changed the rule that changes how teams bid for home games. Now the Sounders will actually have to go on the road to possibly win a USOC game.

If United ever plays the Earthquakes, I’m sure San Jose would at least be able to keep it at a respectable (not really) 5-0 scoreline…

Arsenal, mostly because Van Persie is having the season of his life. Also, they’re simply not as bad as they were at the beginning of the season, especially once they get Wilshere back.
Chelsea, on the other hand, is a complete mystery to me. I have no idea why they’re struggling like they are. Maybe it’s just that the core of their team is getting old? But still, they have plenty of young or semi-young talent.

RvP
Hands down, easily the player of the year at this point. Arteta has settled them down as well. But man, fourth would seem hopeless if RvP went down with an injury.

I’ve been thinking the same thing all year. If something ever happened that RVP got hurt and would be out for a lomg period of time that team is screwed, because he’s the only played that consistently scores.

"especially once they get Wilshere back"
I read in the Daily Mail a few weeks ago that Wilshere suffered a setback in his rehabilitation and there’s a good chance he misses the rest of the 11-12 campaign. No your right, Arsenal isn’t that bad as people make them to be. There not great but they got good players in RVP, Ox, Walcott, Vermarlen, Schzheny, Ramsey and Arteta to keep them in the hunt for the final CL spot.
As for Chelsea, I think age is catching up with them as their top guys like Terry, Lampard and Cole are all or close to being 30 and AVB has not been tatically great with this squad so that could be the reason why. Although they do got some good young talent in Cahill and Sturridge. Hope I answered your question properly.

He is so direct when he recieves the ball
Kind of like Valencia is at the moment. His first thought is to make moves toward the goal and that causes defenses problems
And he has an abilty to pick out a finish or a final ball. Theo Walcott wishes he had this kind of ability

Too much to reply to regard the handshake heard round the world.
Or rather, not heard. So I’ll share my thoughts in a separate post.
I don’t like what Suarez did at all. It was stupid and classless. Shaking hands would have likely put the incident behind us and we all could have moved on for the most part. Now this will linger forever, or at least a long time.
That said, Suarez was well within his rights not to shake his hand just as Wayne Bridge was as well and as was Rio when he snubbed Suarez. Suarez still proclaims his innocence and believes that Evra is the source of his ‘villianhood’ in the EPL. If you hadn’t committed a crime (again, I don’t believe he is innocent, but he does), would you honestly want to shake the hand of the person that accused you? Of course not, you would likely be extraordinarily bitter.
Second, Evra is not at all innocent in everything that happened today. Evra tried to take the high road initially by forcing the handshake, but at halftime it sounds like he found himself wallowing in Suarez’s muck. If that man didn’t want to shake your hand, what on earth would make him think that he would want to talk to him at halftime? Forcing a conversation in the tunnel was obviously only going to lead to one thing. (This is all based on what I have heard of the accounts of what happened in the tunnel at the half).
I had no problem with Evra being pumped about the victory or running around the pitch to celebrate (even though I didn’t think he played well again for you guys). What he did by running in front of Suarez and doing it 2 feet away from him again means he clearly lowered himself to Suarez’s level. You are all on here talking about how a hand shake should be gentlemanly and Suarez is a twat for trying to spin this up, but then would defend or not knock an action that was clearly only done to incite Suarez and Liverpool. It’s quite hypocritical in my eyes.
Again, I can’t defend Suarez’s action today, but you shouldn’t be super proud of Evra either.

Can't believe that some people are defending suarez.
Football is the worlds greatest SPORT. Suarez had a chance to bury the hatchet and make today be about just the game but instead he decided to be an immature high school girl and be completely unsportsman like. I never really had that much respect for Suarez but now i certainly have zero for him, LFC and ofcourse Queen kenny.
It would be a great thing if next season niether Queen kenny and suarez were around.
I agree
All he had to do was shake Evra’s hand and this whole mess is buried and it didn’t even had to be the best around. But no he chosed to be a poor sport and not take the high road and as a result Suarez’s name will be in the papers in a negative way for weeks and this is all on top of the bad press he got for kicking Scott Parker.
As for Dalglish, I never cared for him since he came out with the players for warmups againist Wigan wearing a Suarez t-shirt, basically covering himself in glory. Managers are supposed to set a good example for his or her players and by wearing that shirt shows that he’s at the same level as his players which is not good.
But honestly Suarez goes before Dalglish. Kenny has proven to be a good manager and thus he’ll get some leeway. Suarez could be expendable if shit like this continues espically if it starts to effect the team’s preformance on the pitch.

But would the “celebration” happen if Suarez hadn’t have made the first move? Because that happened, it gave Evra…. a chip on his shoulder… it made him pissed off. Granted, he shouldn’t have done it, but it still was Suarez’s action that made him riled. If Suarez had shook his hand, and Evra celebrated like that…. Wll then that is a different matter.

In no way am I trying to defend Suarez
But this is the old, “two wrongs don’t make a right”
Evra could have walked out of OT today with his head held high and would have been regarded in high-esteem throughout the football world as a very decent man who tried to put this behind him. But he didn’t, he acted quite childish, by instigating a fight in the tunnel, if all accounts that are trickling in are correct, and then the crap at the end.
I totally agree that Suarez could have prevented all of this, but that doesn’t necessarily make what Evra did acceptable either.
"The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they don't know the game" -Bill Shankly
If that man didn’t want to shake your hand, what on earth would make him think that he would want to talk to him at halftime
Maybe because he wanted to know why he was snubbed? Ever after he confronted him, Suarez gave him the silent treatment when he went to talk to him.
Personally I see no problem with how Evra handled himself. This was a huge burden for him and with this win Evra finally got his vindication. Huge load off of his back.

Come on now
Really? You think Evra didn’t know why he was snubbed?
Why do you think Evra got the silent treatment? Oh yeah, because last time Suarez opened his mouth to Evra he ended up in hot water. Why would Suarez want to do that again? Sometimes it is best to stay silent and walk away.
Also, I don’t think Evra got vindication. His behavior in the tunnel and afterwards will have prevented that. I agree that Suarez shouldn’t have snubbed him, but Evra didn’t have to come down to Suarez’s level.
"The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they don't know the game" -Bill Shankly
because last time Suarez opened his mouth to Evra he ended up in hot water
Yes, slinging a racial slur towards a black man would do that.
I see nothing wrong with what Evra did. He wanted an answer on why he was snubbed and Suarez gave him the cold shoulder instead of facing him.

It doesn't matter
My point is that Suarez still feels he didn’t do that, but when he did speak it was taken out of context and got him in trouble. So in his eyes, why would he want to put himself in the situation again? He probably feels Evra would take something out of context again.
Let me cut you off though, I am not saying Evra did that, but in Suarez’s eyes he did.
The other thing is that we don’t know exactly what was said in that first incident at Anfield and never will. The findings were merely that they thought that Suarez racially abused him. Not that Evra’s account was factually 100% accurate, nor did they determine what was actually said. They just decided that Evra’s account was the more likely scenario and therefore the more accurate of the two which lent them to believe that Suarez did racially abuse Evra. So from that point, Suarez thinks he didn’t do it and last time he did he talked to Evra he got in trouble. I think the silent treatment makes perfect sense from Suarez’s point of view.

You forget Suarez feels he didn't do anything wrong and that the judgement was wrong
And the fact remains that no one knows what was actually said. Just that the commission decided there was enough to reasonably suspect that Suarez did abuse Evra.
I’m not defending Suarez. I think he did abuse Evra and should have shook his hand. I think it was the complete wrong thing to do. However, I do defend his right to do it. For example, when they go to fan events to talk to people and sign autographs, they always get a handful of middle-aged guys asking them out for drinks (which is even weirder when you consider that a lot of the cheerleaders aren’t 21 yet) and asking to friend them on facebook.

Andy Carroll has been no better than awful every time I’ve seen him play.

Except the final 10' of the FA Cup tie
But he was atrocious for the first 80’.

I'm going to make a request
For those who have already expressed their opinion on the Evra/Suarez situation in this thread, I’m going to kindly request that you comment no more right now. This comment may get lost in the sea of comments already here but if you see this, I’d appreciate it if you went along with this request.
I’m not going to close the comments or anything because this post was intended to encourage discussion of the match. I respect most of the opinions that have been expressed thus far — even the ones I don’t agree with myself — but I just want to prevent our conversation from getting repetitive… and ultimately tiresome.
Thanks in advance everyone!

Liverpool fan here
I haven’t commented in this thread yet, but I’ll say the same thing I said on the Liverpool board: both Suarez and Evra acted like dicks, and it was disappointing to see that.
gosh
a second relatively decent Manc fan after Sweet Science :) I can’t stand any of the ones I know in person lol. Good plan. And….ah – well played today you lot.

Yeah his twitter feed is good stuff
I mean it’s very anti-United, but if you have a thick skin and a good sense of humor, you’ll find his tweets to be pretty entertaining.

Poorly played match?
I’ll watch the match a 2nd time before I do the tactical review but on an initial viewing (and on 3 hours of sleep), I didn’t think either side played that well. United certainly were better at Anfield a fortnight ago in my opinion.
Your thoughts on this?

We played well enough I thought..
But it was because Liverpool was very very poor..
It was a very sloppy game on both sides
Liverpool were just a bit sloppier. Valencia has to be your MoM in my eyes. I realize “the Scouser in a Wig” got two, but the game turned when Valencia started to become more involved and ran at Enrique while Downing was off looking for the Old Trafford Cat or something. After that Liverpool had a hard time getting a foot in. He is also responsible for the corner that set up Rooney’s first. Rooney was pretty anonymous apart from his goals (I realize that sounds dumb, but you know what I mean).
It was definitely played with more emotion than skill on both sides. I thought Evra wasn’t very good either. He really seems to be in a slump.

I thought we were Really limited
Downing has been as bad as I thought he would be, but overall I thought they were a lot better than us, and when those goals went in, all I thought was ‘they were coming’. To take the time off working and sit through that was not fun. Next time I’m having the radio on in the background….

Not helped by the way Dalglish set you up. No Bellamy or Charlie Adam. Both should have been shoe in’s. Adam for his delivery on set pieces, to really test any shortcomings of De Gea. Bellamy… for his pace and finishing ability

"No Bellamy or Charlie Adam"
I’m still scratching my head as well on why either of these two weren’t in the starting XI, espically Bellamy. I mean he’s a fantastic player for LFC and he didn’t start him in one of the biggest games of the season for LFC? Baffles me. Not complaining about it or anything, just saying if I was a LFC fan I would of question Dalglish’s decsion to do this.

one important thing Rooney provides, even if he happens when he happens to play poorly....
is his work-rate and movement. He provides the link between midfield and attack — which was missing at Anfield during the FA Cup match until Park played in this role — in the space between the lines. Also, we can play this 4-4-2/4-4-1-1ish shape against 3 man midfields because he does so well to track back and get goalside of the opposition’s deepest-lying midfielder when United lose possession.
I’m actually hoping to write a post on this soon if I can find the time — but it’s a little alarming how tactically reliant United are on Rooney.
Agree on Valencia… he’s been our most incisive attacker for the past month or so.

Rooney was pretty anonymous apart from his goals (I realize that sounds dumb, but you know what I mean).
I disagree – He was forever linking up with Welbeck in the first half, who constantly made some terrible decisions whenever he got in some real dangerous positions.
Rooney was dropping deep, linking up play beautifully, and all his performance needed was a goal or two…. Oh wait! :)

Evra was almost as bad as last week. And he was shite last week

Enrique probably has been the best LB this season
But I still like Leighton Baines

Rooney always, always plays better when Valencia is in his top form. They just partner really well, and I think Rooney has even come out and said as much.

I thought we sucked in the first half, to be honest. Carrick and Scholes both seemed to be struggling. Good thing we picked it up in the second half.

I actually don't think we played very well
Like you said, we were poor in the 1st half — especially early on. I’m planning on watching it a 2nd time at some point this weekend so I wonder if my opinion will change then. Fergie thought we played well though.

I don't think we played poor in the first half
I thought our passing and was good but we just couldn’t get through LFC’s defense once we got close to the box.
Second half was a different story, we were able to break their defense to get two quick goals, incuding one off of a great corner kick play and another one by having Antonio Valencia being able to force a turnover and being able to pass it to Rooney properly who booted it home. After that we took over the game, we were able to tighten up the defence to the point where Liverpool couldn’t get zilch passed us and from then on we dictated the pace of the game.
IMHO I think if Jonny Evans didn’t slip up on the play that led to LFC’s only goal, De Gea would of kept a clean sheet.
So I disagree Gene, I believed we played a good game overall and a great 2nd half. Couldn’t of it been better in the 1st half? Of course, I would of like to seen more aggressiveness in United’s attack but I would never use the word “poor” to describe the 1st half or even the entire game.

It all came together in the end, but it appeared to take the guys a while to get into a rhythm.

Sometimes it takes awhile for a team to get going
It’s not uncommon to see games go into halftime 0-0. With a expierenced and older team like United, sometimes it can take a bit to get a engine running and form a formable strategy of attack.
It happens as we saw today. But as long as we play good football and win games it dosen’t matter if it takes a bit to get into rhythm as long as you do.

4 points from away to Chelsea and home to Liverpool
Had you offered me that scenario a week ago, I’d have accepted it. Obviously we’d prefer 6 but earning 4 is still very good. I’d actually take 4 from our next two matches as well… away to Norwich (who are playing very well) and away to Spurs. And then just hope that City drops pts somewhere during that span.

Agreed
I mean with Chelsea we were down 3-0 and came back to level it with less than 10 minutes to go.
Norwich will be tough since there a good scrappy team that knows how to eak out points. Not to mention Carrow Road is a huge fortress. But i’m not worried because I know we have the talent to beat them. We traveled to the Liberty to play Swansea in a place where the away team has difficulty getting points and won 1-0. As long as were stingy on defense,we don’t make mistakes and hitting our targets properly we can beat them no question.
Spurs i’m woried about because Spurs have been play great football recently, White Hart Lane is a fortress and after seeing Spurs disperse of Newcastle without having to lift a finger. I’ll need to think about it for a bit before I can make up my mind about how this match will unfold because I think it can go both ways. Yeah we best them earlier in the season but that was in the friendly confines of OT.
Regardless of what the outcomes will be, were in for some good heated football with alot on the line, this is all on top of our huge Europa League tie againist Ajax this week in Amsterdam.

Just imagine
If Kuyt had put his shot wide two weeks ago
Or Evra had cut out the flick on from Carroll
We would all be doing this again mid-week :)
