Around SBN: BJ Penn Says He's Not Interested in Fighting Josh Koscheck

When If Harry Redknapp becomes the next England manager, it sounds as if he would call on Paul Scholes. The midfielder retired from England in 2004 but we've obviously learned that he's capable of coming out of retirement.

Can't be worse than Lampard

He would be much better in the middle with Gerrard than Fat Frank ever was. That experiment clearly never worked and would allow Gerrard to push higher up the pitch where he can be much more influential, especially playing off of Rooney.

the value of a deep-lying playmaker is so underrated

I could envision a situation where in a three-man midfield, Scott Parker plays alongside Scholes and frees up the latter to dictate matches from deep. Allow Gerrard to play higher up the pitch and in behind a lead striker… Tactically, I could see this working very well.

Parker and Scholes would be a very formidable shield in front of the back four.

That would definitely work well while playing to Gerrard’s strengths too.

I have never been fat Franks biggest fan

But against Spain, he was fantastic. His control was brilliant, always shielding the ball from the Spanish. It was like watching a Silva or Xavi the way he manipulated the ball to be honest.

But then as you say, if Gerrard is fit he plays. And if Lampard is fit he plays… despite them playing like horse shit whenever they do play together.

And I can’t see Arry dropping Lamps. Can you?

Maybe with Parker behind Lampard/Gerrard in a 4-1-4-1 shape

However, I feel really dumb suggesting any sort of Lampard/Gerrard combination could work right now… haven’t we all learned after so many tries that it doesn’t work?

But then

What if CLeverley and/or Wilshire is fit.?

I wouldn’t drop Parker, for reasons I have stated before

Also, with Rooney playing so well with Welbeck, I would be tempted to play with a two man midfield. If England are to go deep into a tourney, we have to get the best out of Rooney

Wilshere/Cleverley

It’s probably tough to assume that Wilshere will be fit but if he is, then there is the concern over his form. He’s missed a lot of time now.

Cleverley has to prove it over a longer stretch of time… if he hits top form for the run-in, then I’m sure he’ll certainly get consideration. For now, I think just making the squad would be an accomplishment for him.

Quite honestly, I’d start with Parker right now and build England’s midfield from there.

As Macca put it this weekend

He should play if he’s going to retire from club ball again, but if he wants another year (or more) of club ball stay retired from England

Had Capello given him more time to consider it...

Scholesy said he likely would’ve accepted Capello’s invitation in 2010. I believe Capello literally gave him a day or two to decide and under that time frame, Scholes said the only possible answer was ‘no’

He's only been at United for about a month and England has no manager

I’m sure his mind is elsewhere for the time being.

I think it'll give him something to think about nonetheless..

It wouldn’t be such a simple decision if he have time to think about it imo.. After all, he’s producing at a high level..
