MANCHESTER UNITED TRANSFER RUMOR: Is Mario Gotze on the Ferguson Radar?

WOLFSBURG GERMANY - JANUARY 29: Mario Goetze of Dortmund is challenged by Josue of Wolfsburg during the Bundesliga match between VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund at Volkswagen Arena on January 29 2011 in Wolfsburg Germany. (Photo by Stuart Franklin/Bongarts/Getty Images)

A Sky Sports News report has suggested that the vastly talented Borussia Dortmund playmaker is being lined up by Sir Alex Ferguson. This news, true or not is certain to whet the appetite of Red Devil supporters. The German international, 19, capped 12 times by his country has courted interest from a host of top clubs around Europe. His agent, Dirk Hebel, came out with these quotes.

"I think in Europe all the top clubs are interested in Mario.

"I can confirm that I have had contact with Juventus and Manchester United , but not only them.

"I don't know if he'll go away after this season, you should ask Borussia. But I think that they will not let him leave for less than 40million euros.

The Busby Babe's editor in chief Gene offers these thoughts....

"Gotze is an intelligent between the lines player that likes to come in from out wide and create. He can very much play in the 'number ten' role as well. He's incredibly gifted technically and perhaps Germany's brightest prospect of this generation. He works hard in Borussia Dortmund's pressing scheme and this perhaps bodes well in regard to the youngster's mentality. He's one of the few players in this world that I'd have no problem spending €40 million on. "

I too would like to see us splash some cash for a player, in the attacking mould who is not an out and out 10, like Rooney or Wesley Snjeider, although he can play in thay position, maybe if Wayne Rooney were unavailable. If he plays out wide then he also offers us a little different. WIth all our wingers playing in a more traditional way, mostly staying wide. He seems to be more of a David Silva type of player and that seems to be a very attractive asset. However we are far from the only big club chasing him. The agent suggest Juventus are interested, as well as other clubs that he refuses to name. So we will have to pay big money, in both fee and wages if we are to land the player, something that Manchester United have been fairly reluctunt to do as of late.

If there is such thing as a "can't miss" player

Youth? Check
Talent? Double Check
Experience playing in a big league? Check

Sign him up Fergie.

Ho-hum...

A few days ago, it was Ajax’s Christian Eriksen.
Last week, it was Real’s Sami Khedira or Basel’s Xherdan Shaqiri (actually, going to Bayern).
Soon Modric and/or Snjeider rumors will spring up for the umpteenth time.

I’m just so tired with all the speculation…
(Plus, I think Fergie will be much more likely to re-sign Scholes for one more season.)

Zzz…

To each their own

We realize transfer rumors aren’t for everybody. However, many of our readers do enjoy them. For those readers, we try to offer original insight and something new. For example, I’ve presented in-depth tactical and statistical analysis in the past on possible targets. From there, discussion has followed. If it’s not your thing, then simply don’t it and hopefully we offer you reading that you enjoy.

It’s much more fun to speculate. Plus, sometimes the rumors become reality…

I regard the transfer rumours as mildly informative – I certainly don’t get excited about them, but it does give a broader sense of what’s happening with some of the top players elsewhere, so I’ll give them a skim, especially if it’s someone I hadn’t heard much about before.

But yeah, I think some people get a kick out of rosterbating who could fit where on the team, and how awesome it would be if they were scoring goals for us or whatever… and I say let them :)

Glory glory Man United, AND the other MU, AAAAnd the Leafs. Experiencing cheering whiplash for decades..

It’s just another discussion point, really. Nobody is going to jump off a bridge if Gotze moves somewhere else (especially since the likelihood of him coming to Old Trafford is very close to zero), but he’s a stellar player and he’s only 19. Every major club in Europe would love to have him.

Would love to see it but not sure...

First off, love the site, very balanced and well composed articles. Great work guys…had to sign up!
As far as Gotze…I think he is the only other player besides Modric who would really fill the void we need filled, but I think he came out last yr saying he only saw himself in La Liga.
I feel like Fergie goes for players that believe in the shirt

Cheers

Always happy to hear from readers that they’re enjoying our work. Who knows how much truth there is to this Gotze stuff… but he certainly is somebody to get excited about if we somehow signed him. In my opinion, it’s more likely than not that he becomes a world-class player someday. He is brilliant.

My words exactly! Recently my favourite site about MU is busby babes, keep the good work;)

I also like players Modric, Gotze or Javi Martinez and they probably would fill our weaker places, but there is chance that SAF will try our young players from reserves as well, we will see.

by Andrej on Feb 19, 2012 11:49 AM GMT up reply actions

heard good things about jessie lindgard

from the reserves. Clev said recently that they are so good at keeping the ball away from you in training. He mentioned someone else, but the name escapes me

I haven’t seen Jesse yet, though everybody likes him..I’m just looking forward to see Tunninclife in pre-season matches

Tunninclife is my favourite youngster

seen him just 2-3 times, but he is very hard-working and ambitious, also seems to be not so stupid as Morrison:)

if we are thinking of the same interview

I think it was actually Danny Welbeck who praised Lindgard and Larnell Cole and said sometimes it’s like playing against a mini Xavi and Iniesta.

Probably

There is always some risk attactched to young players who have no premier league experience…. Yet he is so techniqualy gifted and has great speed that I feel he will need minimal effort to slide into the United team

by Sweet science on Feb 19, 2012 9:54 PM GMT up reply actions

Versatile

I believe he’s versatile enough to fit into any system. However, in a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 and if he is deployed on either flank, it would probably be wise to have his opposite wide attacker play near the touchline in order to stretch the opposition. Gotze prefers to cut inside from the flank.

CAM

He’s also a player that could evolve into a player that prefers to play centrally in the space between the lines.

Gene, maybe you can help with my question since you pride yourself on tactics

I’ve only seen Gotze play a few times, and while I would love to have Gotze in Manchester Red, doesn’t he play a very similar role to a Sneijder or a Rooney? From all of your analyses on him, it seems as if he likes to float around behind the strikers which I agree is similar to a Mata or a Silva, but also similar to Rooney or Sneijder..

by Dagestadd02 on Feb 20, 2012 10:26 PM GMT up reply actions

I don’t think it’s as big of an issue for players that come into that space from out wide. They’ll only come inside when the space is unoccupied. Giggs actually played a similar role recently (Liverpool? On my phone so I can’t double check) and it worked well… Giggsy was just loose with his distribution. Just need someone to provide width and stretch the opposition on the other side so the defenders can’t clog the gaps for through balls by defending narrowly.

by Sweet science on Feb 21, 2012 3:25 PM GMT up reply actions

Position?

Man Utd dont really need another CAM as Rooney is already occupying the position.
Although it will be good to have a player who drift inwards from the wing like David Silva, I think Man Utd sorta have that player in Ashley Young/Nani/Giggs. What Man Utd really need is a ball winner in the middle of the park who have a decent passing ability

by Darkcoolster on Feb 21, 2012 7:29 AM GMT up reply actions

4-2-3-1

One way to fit Rooney and Gotze together is to have Gotze play behind Rooney and Rooney playing the Messi role/ false 9. But that would mean sacrificing Hernandez and Welbeck and i caant see it happening.

by Darkcoolster on Feb 21, 2012 7:41 AM GMT up reply actions

Rooney

Keep him where he is. He’s our best player and he’s already stated it’s his preferred role. Keep the volatile and in-form talisman content for now. I’d argue its his best and tactically most important role as well.

Players like Silva and Mata are ‘interiore’ types that drift inward between the lines, create overloads at times, and some can create something from seemingly nothing. It’s a different role from a CAM and ones that can coexist in the correct system and with intelligent movement. Its also something none of our wide plauers really provide at moment. Cutting in to take on a marker is different… which is what Young and Nani often do.

Carrick

As of a few weeks ago, he was 2nd in the in both tackles and interceptions per game. In addition, he’s a ~90% success rate distributo with a wide range — in both technical ability and tempo control.

He’s not a Keano crunching-tackler type, nor a man-marker. But, he’s excellent positionally by providing defensive cover and by intercepting passes in passing lanes. The latter has become mpre important in the modern game, if not more.

Scholes

The return of Scholes has a huge impact on the form of Michael Carrick. The question is whether he can still maintain this form when paired with another player other than Scholes/Giggs. Kinda excited on how the Carrick-Clev combo will work out.

by Darkcoolster on Feb 21, 2012 10:54 AM GMT up reply actions

Scholes definitely has

Carrick has been good since November though and he’s played every single league minute since Swansea. Had he not accumulates two yellows prior to the trip vs Basel, I think we’re playing in the Champions League still. His calm possession from and defensive positioning were sorely missed vs the Swiss side

One other thing, it’s other midfielders that seem to do well with Carrick because of the foundation he provides. He’s been excellent with Giggs and Jones too… and Fletch in the past.

I've never been a huge fan of Carrick to begin with

But i can respect the way he plays the game and his ability. Although Carrick is a great intercepter of passes and a good tackler as well, he doesn’t have that creative pass to unlock a defense in his arsenal. Sure he passes with 90% accuracy, but rarely do we see him make those dangerous passes that can lead to more goals. Right now, our goals come from crosses, or unless Rooney can spring a pass to unlock the defense. Personally, I think only him and scholes are some of the only two guys on the team that have that ability to thread the pass that can unlock a defense.

Not Carrick’s job. As you said, chances are created from Rooney from those out wide sending in crosses.

I’ve spent countless hours on describing Carrick’s value… Rinse, lather, repeat. Ugh.

Also, as of a few weeks ago, he was 2nd in the Prem in forward passes his proportion of forward passes was significantly more than most defensive and box-to-box midfielders. His long-balls attempted and successfully completed are amongst the leaders as well. So what if he plays square passes… that can be very important if someone is aware of the situation’s context. He also does much more which so many don’t recognize due to lazy bias or sheer unawareness.

By no means

Am I criticizing Carrick or saying he is a terrible player. He has been fantastic these passed two seasons. Just saying we need somebody other than Rooney and Scholes to be those creative players. Like you said, it’s not Carrick’s job and Carrick does his job tremendously well. But we need somebody to replace scholes (redundant i know). Hopefully that man can be Cleverley.

by Dagestadd02 on Feb 22, 2012 12:44 AM GMT up reply actions

Gotcha

I do hope (and think) that Cleverley can be an attacking threat in a box-to-box role. He’s dynamic for a player there and hopefully he has the ability to finish on those late-arriving runs

He seems like a player who will be able to grab a goal or two

Once he gets one…..

Mind you, Chelsea fans have probably been thinking that of Torres ofr a while….

But CLeverley has good technique so im sure he will have good power or placement on shots. and he gets in such good positions that im sure it will only be a matter of time before he starts finsing the net
