Injury News: Is Nemanja Vidic In Line To Return This Season?

An early return from injury could result in an image like this again for the United skipper.... (Photo by Jamie McDonald/Getty Images)

The Daily Mail reports that Club Captain Nemanja Vidic very may well return before the season ends. The original target for a comeback was pre-season, but he could return to give our title chances a boost.

Sportsmail understands the former Serbia centre half is making rapid progress as he works on his fitness and is putting significant weight back on his knee during his rehabilitation sessions.

Vidic has been aiming to be fit by the time United head to Asia on a pre-season tour in July and that remains the target set by United's medical staff.

However, there is now an outside chance that the 30-year-old could be ready to play before the end of the season.

Lets bear in mind that these are reports that have not been confirmed by the club (And I wouldn't expect them to be either). Jonny Evans has played in Vidic's absence and really established himself as a Manchester United defender after a poor couple of seasons, particularly last year. He could hardly win a contested header to be honest, but he has made that a strength in his game, putting in some towering displays.

Star-divide

My question is this. Is hurrying Nemanja Vidic back a risk worth taking? Cruciate Ligament injuries can be career threatening when poorly handled and as Vidic is no spring chicken there is a slight doubt that he could be the same presence as he has been since he moved to Manchester. We need to give him as much time as he needs to recover and personally, I feel that pre-season should still be the target. What if he comes back to early, throws himself into a challenge which is such a part of his game and messes his knee up again? That really would be a game changer.....

Having said that, if he is something near to 100%, and has come through a handful of reserve games come April time, what a boost it would be to have Vidic back. Rio Ferdinand is in and out of the team of late as he battles niggling injuries, Chris Smalling has just returned from a minor injury and Phil Jones (very much our 5th choice Cb when all our fit and healthy) has just returned from a month or so out. Jonny Evans has been the real constant in the heart of the back line, and he has performed brilliantly, especially as of late.

Who would have thought we would be saying that about Evans last year.... :) Feel free to share any thoughts about Vidic and the state of the United defense here. Cheers

you’re right, no rush for Vidic, our defense four against ajax was pretty impressive, Evans put solid performance, for now keep it that way

Agree

We were solid against Ajax

But Ajax are a very poor team. Didn’t offer much at all. And I believe they are sat 5th in Everidise (Dutch footie’s top teir… for give the spelling). Hardly the greatest league in the world

of course

the key match is on day 36 (vs. city), but I believe it will be clean sheet, Evans would deserve that after current performances

If only I share your optimism.....

A loonggggg time to go before that happens, More pressing is a tricky away fixture at Carrow road and then a daunting task at White Hart lane. If we get four points I will be happy

Optimistic!

Evans has been great this season…180 from last yr, which was a 180 from when he first broke through, so I guess a 360! I think his greatest skill is reading the attack and positioning himself well, something Smalling is good at too, IMO. I am surprised when we are linked with CBs, lately I’ve read of interest in Benatia and Rami, but I don’t think we need anything there. I also am a huge fan of the twins. I don’t think the injuries are odd since I remember Welbeck going through the same thing at his first few runs in the team…they are young and still growing I imagine.

CB

I think we will have to moniter Vidic’s situation. Knee’s are always a problem when injured, so if he is not up to the standard that he has set himself, or even if other niggiling injuries crop up, we should really consider moving him on. Rio too is not getting any younger, or a reliable pick (Always nursing his back and groin).

So I think we should get an established CB if Nemanja needs moving on.

Big if but the gaffer needs to think about these things

There are articles afloat about Pique being a little unsettled at Barca. I doubt they are true but they were linking him with a return. (Doubt that would happen either even if he was unsettled)

I'm not too worry about Carrow Road

If we play the same type of game we played in Swansea and apply it in Norwich and try to eak out a 1 or 2-0 game, well be fine.

Now White Hart Lane on the other hand…

I think we should get the points

I would be suprised if we didn’t

But it really is a tricky fixture. They will have had a weeks rest, and coming off a defeat to Leicster in the cup. They will want to put in a big performance to please the fans

by Sweet science on Feb 20, 2012 2:51 PM GMT up reply actions

Before I state my answer to your post

You bring up the FA Cup tie with Leicaster. Lets for forget that although that tie was recently played, Norwich did not give a full 100 percent for that game. They rested certain starters such as John Ruddy (and put in a 20 year GK making only his 2nd app for Norwich in Jed Steer) and Grant Holt and subed Steve Morison and Simeon Jackson out early in the 2nd half so they wouldn’t be warned out just so they can be ready for the upcoming PL match.

Paul Lambert even said before the match in his PC in so many words that they wouldn’t be focusing too much on his match because their main priority is to stay in the PL. That right there shows you how much they committed to this FA Cup tie.

With that said I agree it can be a tricky fixture. First off where going to Carrow Road and like the Liberty it’s a fortress and add in the fact that the Canaries are playing one of the big clubs in the PL and the reigning champs will make the team wake up for this fixture right there to play United. One of the big boys are coming to Norwich and they want to give the fans a show and to achieve max points in the process.

Plus Science if you remember when they came to OT, they were not pushovers. Even though we held them in the end to a clean sheet, they battled, scrapped and almost scored the first goal (Anthony Pilkington missed the net). So even in our house they still competed.

But I still believe we can win this match because of the things I said above. But make no mistake it will be a battle and it’s a match i’m really looing forward to seeing. I don’t know about you, but I am.

Il look forward to it if we win :)

Didn’t know that they rested their players…. But that will mean they are even fresher, and that they out more emphasis on this fixture. Don’t forget, we have Ajax on thursday night (Bloody thursday… stupid day)

I think are thoughts are pretty much the same. We are great at grinding out games, something that a team like Arsenal would love to be able to do. But it should be a tight one

by Sweet science on Feb 20, 2012 3:35 PM GMT up reply actions

3 pts should be the expectation

But anybody who underestmates this Norwich side and Paul Lambert’s brilliant tactics this season isn’t paying attention… Or they’re just an idiot.

you should:)

don’t forget our results against spurs, usually good matches with happy end for us:) I am a little worried about Bale great form, but Rafael/Jones will handle that..I did not see Norwich yet, so a little bit mystery for me

by Andrej on Feb 20, 2012 12:42 AM GMT reply actions

Norwich are just a good well drilled side

Confident too

Spurs… I know we have a great record against them, an ]d we have the best away form in the league…. But this is the best SPurs team of the Premier League era, bar none. They are in great form and with Bale, VDV, Adeybayor they have three world class match winners. Add Modric to the mix, and that is a frightening team when they are on form

"I did not see Norwich yet, so a little bit mystery for me"

There a good side. There well coached by Paul Lambert and most importantly that team is built for PL survival because there hard working, scrappy and no’s how to get points by whatever means necessary. Add in the fact that there quite impressive team at home make them the exact type of team that can give big money clubs like ourselves fits.

Vidic return not this soon

I had a similar operation done, he may well be putting “weight” on the knee, but he’s still a very long way from even thinking about kicking a ball, my recuperation lasted 8 months.
There is no real need to rush him back, we have the cover, and they are starting to gel together, we just have to hope Rio’s back holds up.

While I don’t think Vida will return by the end of this year, his recovery time is likely not going to be the same as an average joes. World class athletes tend to heal crazy quick in comparison because their bodies are such well-oiled machines. Couple that with insane work ethic and voila.

Plus this is just another piece of evidence that Nemanja is not a human, but some sort of Serbian robot bear.

too add to Crazylegs (Great name)

Everybody’s recovery time differs to an extent.

Look at Owen Hargreaves :)

my recovery lasted only 3 months, but after a year it came back to me, since then only watching football

by Andrej on Feb 20, 2012 10:40 PM GMT up reply actions

I wouldn't take the risk

These type of injuries take time to heal and if he comes back too soon he could risk re-injuring it again because with the type of game he plays and add in the fact he’s getting up there in age makes it too much of a risk to bring him back if he’s not 110 percent ready.

He must be secretly using horse placenta

That’s the only thing that would explain him being able to return so quickly.

For God's sake

Keep Vidic off the field. Don’t risk his career for a few months.

I'd be perfectly content...

at having Vida near full-health at season’s beginning for 2012-13 and after a full preseason of preparation. Even if he miraciously returned for the end of this season’s run-in, it’d be quite the stretch to suggest he’d be a better choice than our current CBs because of fitness and form.
