Sir Alex Ferguson eyeing up an ambassadorial role with Manchester United

We bow down to you Fergie!!!! (Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)

Sir Alex Ferguson gave an interveiw to Radio Five Live that will air tonight at 7pm tonight (GMT) in which he spoke about a wide range of subjects. I highly reccomend you read the article (A sneak peak of the whole interview yet revealing none the less). It is now common knowledge that he will hand over the reigns of the top job of the club in two or three seasons time, but what will he do after that?

He claims he wants a role similar to what Sir Bobby Charlton undertakes. And ambassador for the club. And I can't see the club turning him down, can you? He really is Mr Manchester United and I think it would be a smart move too. He is such a powerful influence in football and enough is not said about his natrual charm. Everybody knows he can scream and yell (Hairdryer treatment), yet the other side of his personality is overlooked.

He will be able to give his thoughts to the board on the clubs direction as well, without becoming involved in first team matters (Which he should be kept away from when he does step down). His wife also wants him to stay "active" and suggested he become a milkman! (Imagine that)

He talks about a mistake he made in recent years in the transfer market too....

Star-divide

He claims he could have signed Joe Hart from Shrewsbury in 2006

"I could have bought Joe Hart for £100,000 so we all make mistakes. I've no doubt [that Hart will be England goalkeeper for the next 10 years]. If you look at the England goalkeeper situation for the last 20 years, I would think he's easily the best."

High praise, but in my opinion justified too. Imagine if we had Joe Hart in goal for us in the for he has been in this season. You could argue that we would be in the Champions league, FA Cup and top of the Premier League.....

Hart made the move to City for £600,000 in the end. He spent time out on loan at Birmingham in which he gained valuable first team experience and he is set to play in his first major international tournament this summer. He may well Captain the side too, with some speculating he should be offered the position after Terry was stripped of the honour.

But hell, even Fergie makes mistakes. And it is not as though David De Gea is lacking in potential either.

Anway, with interveiws such as these, it makes you think what will happen to the club after the fergie years. Who will succeed him, will we stay successful etc. Feel free to add any thoughts!

I think it's perfect.

Anybody who has spent any amount of time watching SAF knows that, upon his retirement, he’s not just going to ride off into the sunset and leave Man U forever. He’s alluded to the fact many times that Manchester United is his life.

But, this also means that once SAF leaves, we will have to find a manager that will be able to stand up under the pressure of SAF looming over the entire club.

I hope that isn’t the case. It would be like Dalglish over Hodgson’s head. As soon as we lose a game everybody will be crying out for him to return.

I hope he stays in the background. I am sure he will. He knows what is best

Fergie Time!

Without a doubt that would be fantastic. My only concern would whether his successor would feel as though he (or she?) has enough autonomy.

I can't even imagine Sir Alex retiring.

But, the rumors surfaced again 7 (?) years ago as well. One personality type I DO NOT WANT is a coach who has made a point of being a journeyman. No thanks. I’d much rather have a coach like Bruce or O’Neil. I only wish Roy Keane had the mentality to coach at this level… maybe some day he’ll calm a bit and be a LITTLE more statesman-like.

2001...

is when Fergie targeted retirement at one-time. After a less than successful season by United standards, he wanted to keep fighting on as the club’s manager… Thank goodness he did.

I’m fine with a short-term successor. It perhaps may even be ideal as the club transitions to the post-Fergie era… one that seemingly may still see his influence at United. Maybe it’s the 2nd successor — after a possible short-term successor — that can build a squad with his own identity.

I see it the same way

However, I don’t want a situation where we are going through multiple managers in a short amount of time. Hopefully SAF can help with the transition and help supporters and ownership be patient with the new manager. He himself has ridiculed other teams who fire coaches quickly.

O'neil

Love that man. Doing a brilliant job at Sunderland. a brilliant manager. I would love for him to get the United job. Or England

Bruce have pretty much been a Journeymen during his managerial career..

David Moyes is my personal choice but that lack of big game experience is….

Looking for the perfect 'fall guy'

When a big club loses a very very successful (and well loved) manager, the next guy is always destined to fail.

The only way to avoid this scenario is to have Sir Alex retire on a ‘losing note’ – which he does not want to. So yeah, the next guy’s destined to fall.

I hope that the one after the ‘fall guy’ will be Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho

I’d actually like him to be the ‘fall guy’ … because he actually has the steel in mentality to take on this task and prevent himself from being a ‘fall guy’

P.S. Expecting or perhaps wishing for self-sabotage on Fergie’s successor by the club would certainly be shocking… I’m talking Liverpool’s PR team shocking

Lol... It's not just the PR that's shocking for Liverpool

But yeah, of course United won’t be taking the approach I mentioned above. It’s just that the phenomenon is somehow inevitable. I can’t recall the last time a manager who took over from a legendary manager has ever done well (Then again I’ve only started watching football in the early 21st century)

P.S: Mourinho is another problem himself. Note that none of his clubs have achieved similar successes after his departure. That itself is pretty toxic. (But I still want him to manage us though)

Made The Right Decision ?

Did Fergie really feel that Joe Hart would have been a better fit in Place of EVDS than De Gea ?
If that’s so , then its too late to act .

What's It In The Name .

Im sure if fergie had a crystal ball in front of him

He would have chosen Hart….

Having said that, think how many players United must get offered? Some times you get a glimpse of that player and you have to make a judgement. Not always goingto be the right one cough cough Bebe cough

Timing is everything

We still had VDS through last season while Joe Hart was already establishing himself as City’s and England’s No 1. Edwin’s last season was one in which he was arguably the best goalkeeper in Europe so it would have been hard for Hart to breakthrough in the timeframe that he did if he were at United. Sometimes in life, timing is everything….
