Official: John Terry stripped of England captaincy

Two days before Manchester United travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea, John Terry, captain of Chelsea has been stripped of the England captaincy.

Yesterday, FA Chairman David Bernstein spoke to all of the board members, and today, Terry is understood to have been phoned by the chairman to inform him of their decision. Here is a portion of the FA's statement, which can be read in full at the click of the link

Following the decision to adjourn the court case against John Terry to July, The Football Association confirm he will not captain the England team until the allegations against him are resolved.

The FA Board expected the trial to be concluded prior to the European Championship. Further to Wednesday’s confirmation that the trial will not take place until after the tournament, the Board has discussed the matter in detail and has collectively decided it is in the interests of all parties that John has the responsibilities of captaincy removed at this time.

This decision has been taken due to the higher profile nature of the England captaincy, on and off the pitch, and the additional demands and requirements expected of the captain leading into and during a tournament.

Star-divide

Terry has pleaded not guilty to his charge of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand. Now, regular readers will know my thoughts on this. However now I am going to play devils advocate. Lets look at the flip side

Terry still hasn't been proved guilty. Not by a court of law, or by the FA who will undertake their own disciplinary hearings after the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) have ruled on the case. So by stripping him of the captaincy, the FA are.....condemning the man because of something he is, at this time, only alleged to have done.

This in part has been brought on because Chelsea asked the judge residing over the case to delay the hearing to July the 9th. After the Premier League season and after the Euro's. It has forced the FA's hand.

The statement states that Fabio Capello will be allowed to include Terry in the upcoming friendly against Holland.

The last time Terry was stripped, the Captaincy fell to United's Rio Ferdinand, the brother of Anton. Yet recently he has struggled to maintain his place, with a loss of form and loss of fitness cited as reasons.

Taking this back to United's game with Chelsea on Sunday, how do you think this will affect Terry's performance? He is a strong minded player, and I think it is set up for him to put in a big performance. As a screw you to the bigwigs at the FA. And who do you think the England Captaincy should fall to? Rio? Frank Lampard? Scott Parker would be my shout.

Update: Rio hs tweeted that he does not want the national team armband

Rio posted on twitter that he doesnt want to be the next England captain. I think it should be given to someone who regularly plays and is not a player with a history like Terry. My vote is to give the captaincy to Joe Hart. If anything he can be as good as Iker Casillas who is the Spain captain. and Hart is a perfect long term choice.

Hart is in with a shout

He is most certainly our number one

I still like Parker though. He embodies the English bulldog spirit

Apparntly his name trended on twitter

Alot quicker than messer’s Gerrard and Lampard. Apparntly he was 10/1 (or 1/10…. whatever means more money) I should have wacked a cheeky £10er on it

the Guardian is running a poll on who England's captain should be

As the time I’m linking this, it has Gerrard at 37.8%, Parker at 25.4%, and Joe Hart at 18.5%.

LOL at Wazza being an option. Could you imagine?!

You Englishman love your renegade folklore!

Just kidding…

Parker is starting to sound like an obvious choice to me. He should be a regular in a deep-midfield role at Euro 2012 and your other reasons for his appointment in your Phil Jones piece seems on-point from this neutral’s perspective.

This makes me think though… it’ll be a quick transition it seems before the discussion turns to Hart, Jones, or Wilshere for Brazil 2014. Assuming England qualifies that is.

Well most Pundits are pushing Gerrard for the Euro's

Graham Taylor thinks he is the obvious choice. Decisions like that made him a shit England manager

For instance, Gerrard has struggled for fitness all season. He has never really excelled in an England shirt, either as Captain or as a regular starter.

Parker has done excedingly well since breaking into the set up. He’s been in the form of his life the last two seasons. Captained West Ham rather heroically, despite them going down (He really was a one man team at times). And he really is a model professional.

There isn't a person in football (or maybe life) I hate more than John Terry.

I’m not saying I pray for him to get hit by a bus but that may be more a product of my failure to attend church and less about my dislike for him.

Google “John Terry 9/11” for my reasoning.

Bookmakers had Gerrard at 9/4 last night....

I imagine that has dropped closer to even money (I’m too lazy to look it up).

No more England captaincy for Terry please

Whether guilty or not, Terry has twice stirred up some major controversies. We need someone who can actually lead the national team on the pitch, not off the pitch and for non-footballing reasons.

I hate to say this, but Gerrard seems like the natural choice to wear the captain’s armband. He has to start playing well under Capello though (something that hasn’t happened often throughout Capello’s reign)

Regardless of Terry not getting his day in court...

The FA had no choice but to do this. With all the stories on racism this year with Terry-Ferdinand and then with Suarez-Evra, the FA want all the negative publicity on racism to go away and the first step do do that was to strip Terry of his captaincy. It was a good move by the FA (just wished they consulted Capello before making the move), whatever Terry is innocent or not is irrevelent. The fact remains there solid evidence that Terry racially abused Ferdinand and with a friendly againist Holland coming up, Euro 2012 around the corner and with Terry’s trial not starting until after Euro’s the FA nad no choice but to strip Terry of the armband to stop the bleeding.

Gary Neville though had a intrestring take on this whole debacle:

Interesting read

I think the FA have reached the right decision. Just didn’t go about it in the right way. However the court’s didn’t help as this really should be dealt with by the law ASAP
