According to Sky Sources, Crewe Alexandra's young star Nick Powell is set to become a Manchester United player, with a deal all but done. Three other teams have been in talks, but Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton are set to miss out.
Sky claim the fee could rise to as much as £8M after incentives, certainly a sweet deal for the now League 1 club.
At just 18 years of age, Powell helped Crewe to promotion from league 2 capping a major breakthrough season with a superb goal in the playoff final at Wembely. For a player to do that in the biggest game of his career at his age, I think it certainly bodes well. And Sir Alex Ferguson himself went to watch him in May against Aldershot.
Chances are Powell won't see too much first team action, if any, if the rumours are true, yet I am excited. The boy certainly has ability, and can score plenty of goals from midfield. Maybe he goes on loan next season, however that won't be back to his currant club, as Crewe boss has officially ruled that out.
Do you feel £8M is too much for a player yet to play above League 2?
