A welcome return to form for Nani inspired Manchester United to a hard fought win over Reading to progress to the quarter finals of the FA Cup. We will now host either Chelsea or Middlesbrough
The first half was a drag, but the second half was a joy to watch as United's pressure eventually told on Reading. Goals from Nani and Javier Hernandez were enough to ensure the victory, although Reading captain Jobi McAnuff pulled a goal back after Nemanja Vidic was dragged out of position after having to cover for Alexander Buttner.
So, the first half. United started brightly. Reading came back into it and threatened with corners, thanks to the wonderful left foot of Nicky Shorey and a reluctance to move from under the bar from David de Gea. Our spanish keepr showed good hands to keep out a powerful shot. Phil Jones, got himself injured, which brought on Nani to RM and Valencia shifted back to RB. Nani then showed his intentions after rattling a post on the volley. If my memory serves, that was literaly all the action in the first half. If I missed anything, it was probably because I drifted off.
The second half started much the same as the first. Tensions were running high round Old Trafford due to the lack of passion for a replay, or perhaps wondering if the worst would happen and Reading snatching a goal.
But it wasn't long before we started turning up the pressure. Nani was a constant threat down the right. He unleashed a hell of a shot with his left that whistled past the left post. Soon after, Robin Van Persie stripped off and replaced Ashley Young. That moved Danny Welbeck to the left and RVP slotted into a number 10 role.
This only enhanced our play and a goal looked to be close. Sure enough, Antonio Valencia, relishing attacking from a deeper position picked up the ball and attacked down the right. As he powered into the box he found Nani who applied the finish. I for one made a big sigh of relief.
Soon after it was two. Nani found room on the right and swung in a picture perfect cross. Javier Hernandez, who might as well have been having a snooze by the corner flag for the first hour or so, popper up as he often does and doubled our lead.
Again though, Reading fought back. They are known for their late heroics and sure enough, after some questionable defending, McAnuff had all the time in the world to slot home past the impressive de Gea.
But United saw home the win. A win is a win, no matter how pretty she be. We have had quite a few of these this season. Twelve points clear. An away goal to bring home to Old Trafford in the Champions League, and now a home tie in the Quarter Final of the Cup against Boro or Chelsea. 'Appy Days
A shout out to Nani. Bloody fantastic he was. His passing was brilliant. Lovely weighted balls that released others into space. Cross field passes. Threatening shots. Maybe just one blemish was when he was running at the heart of the defense, he has plenty of support, but instead he tried shooting from somewhere near the south of England. One poor choice in an otherwise fantastic match. He certainly deserves a start at the weekend. Hopefully he can find some consistency.
