It was not exciting. It was efficient. A 1-0 win was enough to see United go 15 points clear after Everton had dispatched Manchester City 2-0 at Goodison Park
If you were looking for passion, vibe and exciting football, this was not the game for you.
However if you love seeing your team 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League, then waive your hands in the air like you just don't care....
Wayne Rooney scored the sole goal of the game, with thanks to a rather large deflection that saw it go past the impressive Stuart Taylor in the Reading goal. In comparison, I am struggling to remember a Reading shot on target. The basement club of the Premier League had good spells throughout the match where they had decent possession, and should have had a penalty in the opening minutes of the second half when Nemanja Vidic pushed Marriappa (I believe) from a corner. But replacement ref did not see fit to point to the spot. Other than that, the makeshift United defense performed admirably, with Chris Smalling at right back and Alex Buttner on the opposite flank.
Ashley Young could have opened the scoring early on. Recalled to the England team earlier in the week, Rio Ferdinand played a searching cross field ball for his England teammate. Young, making a rare start, cut into his stronger right foot and flashed a shot across the face of goal.
The goal came soon after. Again it was Rio Ferdinand who took it upon himself to be play maker. He made a run forward, committed a blue hooped shirt and lofted a delicate ball about ten feet forward for an open Rooney. He himself ran forward and shot. The defender made the block but the ball looped over Taylor and into the top left corner. It doesn't matter how they come people....
The second half played out much the same as the first. Ryan Giggs, playing in the center of midfield continued to pull the strings. Watching him these past few months have been so refreshing. It defies belief how a 39 year old can continue to play at such a high level.
Robin Van Persie could have broken his recent duck, but Taylor dived low to his left to divert a powerful free kick from upwards of 25 yards.
Other than that, I can't really think of much more action. It was a boring game if truth be told.
But I really don't care. We are 15 points clear and are certain to lift the League title.
